HomeMy WebLinkAbout2020-09-29 Caldwell Youth Forum Minutes Caldwell Youth Forum Subcommitte AP'R OVED September 29, 2020 via ZOOM Meeting Minutes Date 1 a PRESENT: Ron Bonneau, Angie Point, Daphne Lightfoot, Kaylee Farrell, Chelsea Wilson, Dynisha 5m1i, Melissa Phillippi and Krista Kingston (Ridgevue RAKtivist advisors), Steven Jenkins, Laurie Wood, Scott Herdegen, Kelly Emry, and Patrick Precht Meeting called to order at 10:07am by Ron Bonneau. Angie motioned, and Kaylee seconded the motion to approve the meeting notes from the September 8, 2020 meeting. Motion carried. Ron asked if counselors could give a summary of how they feel students are doing through all the changes related to school and NB scheduling for in-person classes. Some of the comments: • Students are navigating how to adjust to half at school and half at home. Most would prefer full-time at school; work on at-home days is often incomplete or missing. • Students are struggling academically, socially, and emotionally. • Balancing virtual days is a struggle—staying on schedule is hard, some are electing to work at a job rather than school on virtual days. • Dynisha sent out a seven-question `universal check in' survey before school began; a few results: o Sixty-eight percent stated they were experiencing high stress about school and COVID. A significant number stated they did not feel they could manage the stress. o Overall, some are managing OK, but many are struggling. • Oster Hernandez was not able to attend, but sent a link that speaks on the impact that COVID has on students and educators... https://www.brookings.edu/bloq/brown-center-chalkboard/2020/05/27/the- impact-of-covid-19-on-student-achievement-and-what-it-may-mean-for-educators/ Questions to keep in mind as we plan for future Youth Forums: How do we best serve our students? Are we addressing the right needs? Are we meeting the mission of the Youth Master Plan? The Ladder of Participation shared by Kaylee at the last meeting may be a vehicle for focusing the activities and discussion for the Forum day. Committee members suggested building a survey with a few questions, and utilizing social media and/or school contacts (if approved by administration) to get it in front of students. Kaylee shared that students mostly engage on Instagram, Tiktok, and snapchat—very few on Facebook. So a student survey shared on Facebook may not receive the best response. The political climate is also impacting students and adding to their concerns; there are concerns about immigration status, and bringing COVID home to more susceptible family members. A `survey team' will get together on October 15th to collaborate on building a possible survey for students. It was suggested to review the Youth Master Plan document and the surveys contained in it before the meeting on the 15th: https://www.cityofcaldwell.orq/home/showdocument?id=40 The schedule for subcommittee meetings will be updated for 2021 and reviewed at the November 10, 2020 meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 11:10am. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 10, 2020 at 10:00 am at Vallivue High School. The COVID situation may require a ZOOM meeting format instead; subcommittee members will be notified accordingly as the time approaches. Respectfully submitted, Angie Point, Caldwell Youth Forum Subcommittee
