Review of Caldwell Youth Forum goals/intent as it pertains to the Caldwell Youth Master Plan.
Values pertaining to community involvement, taking ownership for community interaction,
post-secondary opportunity awareness, leadership development.
Vallivue and Caldwell both report that the Youth Forum has provided a positive influence from
which to design programming at each school and the subsequent impact these programs have
had on the students involved. Summary — the Caldwell Youth Forum is serving a real purpose
and meaningful experience which should continue.
Note from July 7, 2020 CYF meeting minutes - Donna reminded all that the college atmosphere was a big piece
of the original'why'for holding a Youth Forum. The subliminal context of'GO ON'to higher education is valuable
and should be evaluated before looking at venue options. One of the primary goals has always been to help
students create a welcoming environment at school campuses so that students can learn without worrying about
outside issues or safety.
The'Ladder of Participation'shared by Kaylee was reviewed and discussed to how the principles
within may help outline and identify changing roles for students to assume in the development
process. The value of these goal outcomes helps outline steps that nurture the mission of the
Caldwell Youth Master Plan.
Continuity for participation presents one of the greater challenges for student involvement.
This aspect will require more investigation to identify relevance and purpose for engagement
throughout the school year.
Leadership skill development, as outcome goal expectations for the Caldwell Youth Forum,
needs further definition and implementation. Questions for students: What does leadership
mean? And what does it look like? Experiential opportunities need to be further promoted
and made available outside the classroom, perhaps through volunteer services or community
involvement. Fostering and modeling behavior by staff and administration is also key to
boosting desired outcomes.
Next meeting agenda: Develop a survey/questionnaire to better identify and understand what
the student experience is in today's academic climate.
,
Notes from July 7 CYF meeting - Messaging: Several questions and comments centered around how students are
maneuvering through the current health/social/political environment, and whether the messaging should reflect
some of these issues. The main message has always been 'it's on us to stand up for what is right'. Current
events present a unique opportunity to perhaps extend/focus this messaging. Messaging may be more important
than activities for the near future.
The next meeting will be Tuesday, Sept 29, 2020 at loam via ZOOM Meetings.
Set dates and location for spring 2021 Caldwell Youth Forum.
Motion to adjourn at 12:15pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Ron Bonneau, Chair
Youth Forum Subcommittee
