Meeting Notes, Tuesday, July 7, 020
Date I a1-t(aJ
Present: Ron Bonneau, Toni Brinegar, Oster Hernandez, Chelsea Wilson, Donna Shines,
Angie Point, Daphne Lightfoot, Kaylee Farrell, Jeri Gowen, Steven Jenkins
Meeting called to order at 10:05 am. Ron welcomed those in attendance and asked
participants to review the minutes and provide comment if desired. Daphne Lightfoot and
Jeri Gowen, with Prevention Associates, were new to our subcommittee and asked to be
added to our roster.
ACTION ITEM: Donna motioned, and Oster seconded the motion to approve the minutes
from May 5, 2020. Motion passed.
Proposed Budget: Angie reviewed the changes to the budget and outlined the expected
expenses.
Proposed Venue Change: Ron received information from the college indicating that they
would not be hosting outside guests until December due to COVID-19. Proposing a change
of venue to Indian Creek Plaza or O'Connor Field House for the September 16, 2020 Forum.
Both venues are available at this time.
Donna reminded all that the college atmosphere was a big piece of the original 'why' for
holding a Youth Forum. The subliminal context of 'GO ON' to higher education is valuable,
and should be evaluated before looking at venue options. One of the primary goals has
always been to help students create a welcoming environment at school campuses so that
students can learn without worrying about outside issues or safety.
Messaging: Several questions and comments centered around how students are
maneuvering through the current health/social/political environment, and whether the
messaging should reflect some of these issues. The main message has always been 'it's on
us to stand up for what is right'. Current events present a unique opportunity to perhaps
extend/focus this messaging. Messaging may be more important than activities for the near
future.
After much discussion, the consensus was that students would be better served by moving
the Youth Forum to Spring 2021. Between now and then, subcommittee members are
encouraged to continue to educate ourselves--relate how it has affected us to how it has
likely affected students. Have the conversations ourselves before bringing students into
them. Possibly look at going in to the schools (virtually?) to speak to students in order to ask
for their input as to what helping in a meaningful way might look like. Invite students to
ZOOM meetings. Make a list of topics, present to students and let them tell us if they are
ready to hear it. It's On Us -- we take it on to present the resources students need.
ACTiON ITEM: Toni made a motion, and Oscar seconded the motion to move the Fall 2020
Caldwell Youth Forum event to the Spring of 2021, date and location to be determined.
Motion passed. Angie will submit a request to the City asking to carry over the current
budgeted funds.
Next meeting agenda: Ron asked if Kaylee could send out youth specific resources for all,
and we could review information and likely have a better idea by the time of our Septmeber
meeting what schools are doing at that time and what conversations we may need to have.
Rosa suggested that meeting participants pick a topic, quote, or video that touched
us/taught us something/helped educate us, to bring to our next meeting. Be willing to listen
to each other, and be comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Oster motioned, Kaylee seconded the motion to adjourn at 11:25 am. The next meeting will
be Tuesday, Sept 8, 2020 at 11am via ZOOM Meetings.
Respectfully submitted,
Angie Point, Secretary
