Highlights: • Seniors are targeted frequently, as they often have retirement savings accounts. Phone call scams, on-line scams, job scams, and lottery scams are most common. o Key element is to gain bank/investment account information. • Teens and young adults targeted for credit card scams and job/romance scams. • Personal mail is also targeted—checks received in the mail can be altered and deposited by someone else. Often not traceable. • On-line reporting or tracking websites: o FBI Internet Crime Complain Center(IC3) –https://www.ic3.gov/ o Federal Trade Commission–https://www.ftc.qov/complaint o Federal Communications Commission –https://www.fcc.qov/consumers/ o Better Business Bureau Scam Tracker–https://www.bbb.orq/scamtracker/northwest will tell you the common scams for our area. • USPS has a tool that will let you digitally preview incoming letter-sized mail scheduled to arrive soon. Look for it at USPS.com (Informed Delivery tool). Fiona motioned/Carol seconded the motion to accept minutes from October 22, 2019 Census 2020–The City, Caldwell School District, and the Caldwell Housing Authority are partnering to have a Census booth at the May 9, 2020 carnival block party at Farmway Village on May 9, 2020. Census workers will be there from noon–6pm for the "complete count"effort. There will be entertainment, kids activities, and free hotdogs for kids in the Census table/booth area. The fear factor that often comes with Census workers coming to the door seems to be eliminated in a block party/carnival environment. Fiona will follow up on an idea to dedicate a couple of computers at the Library for Census purposes. Lacey is working on ideas as well. City Hall has a good deal of information in the foyer, including that Census 2020 is hiring. Assistance League®of Boise (ALB), Canyon County Branch -The City has partnered with the Assistance League® of Boise to form a Canyon County Branch to benefit Canyon County families. • Baby Bundles will be provided to Canyon County hospitals, to provide baby items to families who may need help in providing for their new baby. • Operation School Bell provides clothing, shoes, and sometimes other supplies for students in Canyon County. Grant funding will provide for clothing and shoes for 99 students on March 10 and 11th. At this time, there are specific needs for volunteers: some to put together Baby Bundles, and some to help kids shop for school clothes on March 10 and 11. There will be future events as well, so those who would like to be involved with these projects should contact Julie Yamamoto, and/or come to one of the luncheon meetings. The next ALB, Canyon County Branch meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 12th at Noon in the Caldwell Train Depot. Caldwell Saves 1st–Carol Mitchell–The target crowd for the Fall program is the YMCA school bash, held on the day before school starts. On April 14th, City Staff will be participating with CAPED's"Gone to Do Good" Financial Literature hands-on seminar. Todd Christensen, of CapEd, is the primary contact, and is looking for volunteers to . help staff the one-day event. Their website has some great financial literacy courses available free of charge as well. We the Family—Fiona May- In need of a few more bodies to flesh out the subcommittee ranks and for fresh ideas and willing hands. Specifically want to promote free, family-friendly, interactive events that happen in Caldwell. Focus is on activities to participate in, rather than sit-and-watch activities. Fiona would also like some input from others on "how can we be a resource that points families to something that matters". Contact fmay@cityofcaldwell.org with ideas, and/or to volunteer. Greatest need is someone to manage the We the Family Facebook and/or website pages. Agencies/organizations at the meeting may have resources that could be highlighted on website page and Facebook; for example: • Blue Cross: Health information to post on the site that would be helpful to families, as well as links to other free resources. • Health &Welfare: Resources and links to information about children's mental health, resources for strengthening families, etc. • Boys and Girls Clubs, WICAP: resources on early childhood development and any-day outdoor activities (with how-to information) that could be posted on the website • Family advocacy: Resilience activities/resources to help with families who might be `stuck' and don't know what to do or who to ask. • Caldwell Saves 1st: Links to financial literacy resources (CapEd website links, for example) Youth Forum Subcommittee—Ron Bonneau • The January meeting was at CHS to review with students what they had learned, and what they had brought back. Students are thinking beyond themselves in promoting acts of kindness on a whole-school scale. Goal is to make the school culture one where everyone can feel they have a place to belong. Next month's meeting will be at Ridgevue High School. • In April there will be a Youth Forum Reunion to bring back together the students who have attended in the past. This is an opportunity for each school to share what they have been working on all year, to visit with other schools about what worked well for them, and pizza! The next Caldwell Youth Forum is September 16th, a few weeks after students return from summer break. Family Fun Day—June 13, 2020. —Debbie Geyer- St. Lukes awarded a$1,000 CHIF grant for this unplugged, family activity day. • The main activities will remain the same (fishing derby, color run, chalk art contest), there will again be a free hotdog lunch, and planning will include adding other activities new to the event. JustServe will be our volunteer base. Fiona suggested that Book-it-Forward may be willing to provide free books for kids; she will follow up. • The planning committee is also organizing `free' agency/organization booths for a resource/activity fair portion of the event. Each booth will provide a free activity and/or a giveaway pertinent to families. If you would like a booth and can bring an activity, talk to Debbie 208-455-4656. The next Family Fun Day planning meeting is March 31, 2020 at noon in the CPD Community Room. Other items of note from community partners: • Summer reading at the Library—please use any and all ways to get the word out; starts June 1; ends July 31. Summer reading is for ALL ages; prizes for kids AND adults! • Chelsea Wilson reported on 2CKidsSuceed: Steering committee is looking for ideas for their periodic focuses. Roger Sherman is helping to guide the training. This is a Canyon County-wide initiative focusing on community efforts to improve childhood resiliency scores and prevent childhood trauma. Contact Jean Mutchie with ideas, or for more information: fitzgerj@slhs.org. • Idaho Youth Ranch—Any youth younger than 16 can get a free book each time they come in to any Idaho Youth Ranch store. • YMCA free day is this Saturday, February 29th. Booths are open 12-3. Health &Welfare likes to have a presence at these type of events to let everyone know about increases in mental health benefits, so more who need the services can be served. This is one of the ways they are working toward "wraparound, YES" (Youth Empowerment Services). • Mentoring Network --As always, please encourage mentoring in schools, neighborhoods, churches. Teach kids about hobbies-- kids don't know or understand what hobbies are. Wouldn't it be fun if people came together and shared hobbies that kids could learn about and maybe get into. • WICAP—Currently taking appointments for next school year's pre-school classes. Contact any of the area WICAP centers for more information and to register. • Boys and Girls Club Gala fundraiser dinner in May to raise money for kids. Look for more information on Facebook. • Ron Bonneau (Caldwell Youth Forum Subcommittee Chair) will be retiring in June, but the College of Idaho is committed to maintaining their partnership with the Youth Master Plan Committee in supporting the annual Youth Forum. • Caldwell School District: Kindergarten and school registration day at Canyon Springs in May. Need vendors! o Also, encourage people to vote on March 10th —this year is the school levy vote. Flyers with information are available. Key take-away: new levy request will NOT cause increase in taxes. Absentee voting going on now. Chelsea will help get word out (CSD website has info as well). Donna motioned, Fiona seconded the motion to adjourn at 11:22 am. The next Youth Master Plan Committee meeting will be on Tuesday, April 28, 2020 at 10:00 am at the Caldwell Police Department Community room. Respectfully submitted, Angie Point
