HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-11-12 Youth Forum minutes Ay, pAigO1/ Caldwell Youth Forum Subcommittee Min --.6 Q Tuesday, November 12, 2019 Present: Ron Bonneau, Toni Brinegar, Kelly Emry, Patrick Precht, Angie Point, Josh Williamson, Chelsea Wilson, and 4 VHS Students: Ana Vega, Alyssa Ortiz, Gordon Marlett, Aria Lopez. Ron welcomed the students and everyone introduced themselves. Josh motioned, Patrick seconded the motion to approve minutes from September 24, 2019. Motion passed. Budget for 2019 Youth Forum was reviewed; due to the generosity of several local businesses, there is $957.19 left in the Forum account after all expenses are paid. Proposed schedule for 2020 was reviewed. A few changes were suggested to allow more time for the break-out groups, and there was discussion about emphasizing the purpose in more intentional ways. Vallivue students reviewed a few of their current and upcoming projects: • Put together a 4-period assembly, with Kaylee (Advocates Against Family Violence) as guest speaker. Focus was to help students identify healthy relationship characteristics for themselves, and for others. The It's on Us Club members passed out white boards and facilitated with Kaylee on the last class. • Staff Appreciation "Donut Dash Day"-- set time aside to show appreciation for lunch ladies, janitors, bus drivers, and tech guys throughout the day. For bus drivers, when a bus pulled up, they would jump on the bus and give a certificate and a donut to each driver. • Many in the group want to go to a nursing home and visit residents before and after the holidays—especially those that don't receive many visitors—to show residents that they are remembered. Working out who to talk to so they can coordinate when to come and if they could provide an activity, or a game afternoon, or just visit with residents. • Ron commented that the impact from students visiting a facility where his Mom is a resident was phenomenal. All the residentsl have stories, and company is what they long for. o Mental Health day on the day sophomores take PSAT: Four periods to talk to the rest of the students about mental health. Another outreach planned on SAT day. o Talking to Intermountain Hospital about a Mental Health Fair, possibly in April. The group wants other students to see that those with mental illness issues are still part of the community –we still care about them and they belong. Other thoughts on the Forum day: • After-Forum Survey: Patrick will look into survey options, either a paper option immediately after the Forum, or an online option sent to student emails within a week of the Forum. Counselors and staff would like to know if it is meaningful and purposeful for students, and if the message the students are receiving is the one intended for them to receive. Forum planning may need to include a little more time at the end of the day to clarify the purpose of the "It's On Us" theme. • PlayFair facilitator or locally available facilitator: Toni met with Kelly, Josh, Mario Pyle (formerly with Youth Challenge Academy) via Zoom meeting, to talk about possibilities to hire a local facilitator for the annual Youth Forum. She created a google doc for all to comment on about activities/icebreakers that tend to work well, and incorporating some of the focus questions into the activity time. This would give us better control of the messaging. Josh stated that there are no supplies needed for most activities; there is only a need for one dynamic leader to keep everyone moving. Idaho Coalition Against Sexual Violence also has people who know how to facilitate these kinds of events. There would need to be buy-in from the Mayor, as his Community account is the funding source for the facilitator part of the day. • Spring Reunion: Looking at the possibility of staging a Youth Forum Reunion in April, and inviting those who attended the Forum this past fall. Each school could showcase a project or two that they sponsored after the Fall Forum, and participate in a few `ice-breaker' type activities. Toni will look into probable costs with food/snacks, etc., Angie will check with Plaza staff about availability in April (Saturday) and cost. Counselors are encouraged to ask their students if they would be likely come to this event on a Saturday in April. Meeting adjourned at 11:20. The next Youth Forum Subcommittee meeting will be on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at 10:00 am at Caldwell High School (3401 S. Indiana Street). Respectfully submitted, Angie Point
