APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Ron opened the meeting at 10:14 am. Donna Shines motioned/Kelly Culver seconded the
motion to approve the minutes from 1-15-2019. Motion passed.
Ron went over the rest of the 2019 meeting calendar with those present and noted that there
did not appear to be any conflicts.
SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS.
Green Dot presentation: Jeff Matsushita: Premise: To end violence, we need to be proactive
in preventing power-based personal violence. Green Dot is geared toward high school and
middle-school student populations. It has been in Melba high school for 6 years.
Red dots are anti-social habits and negative speaking patterns. Green dots happen when
students change the conversation to steer away from red-dot patterns. Training students to
work from their own strengths, and take a moment to interrupt the negative behavior. Initial
training/overview is an 8 hour session, followed up 30 days later with a half-hour session. In
all, there are 8 different contacts (exposures) between program leaders and students.
Ron: Perhaps there might be some part of this program that could enrich the Youth Forum
day--something that would fit with what we are already doing.
'In their Shoes' curriculum -- Kaylee Farrell: AAFV teen program staff learned about it from the
Washington state coalition. Each session starts with 5 cards; each card/color is a simulation
activity based on a true story. Topics include dating violence, abuse at home, friendship
relationships, and others. Focus is that people can have a hand in changing the outcome.
What do we normalize that we shouldn't; what could people do differently to change the
negative outcome. The stories are common, the behaviors are happening; this is a chance to
address it and say it's not OK. Recognize that it's not OK, and work out what needs to change.
NEW BUSINESS:
Youth Forum follow-up at Canyon Springs - Kelly Culver: The school is emphasizing "KP3" as
something - stands for Kind, Present, Proud, Professional. Not just for the students; kids
calling out the adults on it as well. The Forum kids have really jumped on it and are making it
a point to remind others. The Forum students also talk about which kids to send to the Mayor's
Youth Advisory Council -- after the Forum there is much more interest in getting involved.
The entire school dynamic has changed, and Kelly is seeing great potential in several of the

students. The big takeaway for them at the final session of the Forum: we (at Canyon
Springs) are no different than you (other schools) —just smaller.
Ron: Messaging is to create environment to promote/enhance learning. How? From the
beginning we have focused on awareness and involvement. It's all about relationships — to
peers, family, teachers, others that we don't know. Starting with students who don't know each
other and bringing them in to an atmosphere of community. An intentional move to shift the
culture at school to promote learning. Toni: It's about creating connections between people,
rather than categories to drop 'others' in. Donna: Adults need to model it, not just hold it up as
something kids need to learn how to do.
Meeting was adjourned at 11:15 am; our next meeting will be on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at
Ridgevue High School, 18800 Madison Road in Nampa.
Respectfully submitted,
Angie Point
