Meeting Minutes for January 15, 2019
Present: Ron Bonneau, Angie Point, Crystal Medina (CHS student), Kaylee Farrell, Scott
Herdegen, Toni Brinegar, Kelly Emry, Emily Lagrone (CHS student), Patrick Precht, and
Donna Shines
Meeting called to order at 10:05 by Ron Bonneau.
Kelly motioned/Toni seconded the motion to approve the minutes from the meeting on
November 13, 2018. Motion carried.
Crystal and Emily (CHS students) gave us an overview of the CHS Youth Forum club: They
are finding that letting other students know why they do what they do helps generate interest in
joining in on the projects. They both feel that the club is a positive influence, with a variety of
activities that students can interact with or get involved in. There is an A lunch group and a B
lunch group that meet every other week. Once a month, both groups meet together before
school to talk about events and to see where there might be a need for help in one group or
the other. Upper classmen and counseling aides often have a free period when they can work
on projects in the conference room. Great support from staff and the administration — Mrs.
Wilson stops by meetings often to see what the plans are and to ask if they need anything.
Their primary goals are breaking cliques and encouraging communication for all, so that each
student will feel free to interact with everyone, not just those in their particular clique.
Everyone should feel welcomed, and that they have value.
Suggestions/reactions about the Forum day: Crystal enjoyed finding out more about
Advocates Against Family Violence, and building communication with students from other
schools. Emily enjoyed the focus on building relationships and building community. Both
thought it very helpful to hear about the direction the other schools were going in implementing
some of the Forum ideas at their own schools. They would also like to see a joint school event
involving one or more Youth Forum-inspired club from different schools — perhaps the CHS
club collaborating with Vallivue High School's 'It's On Us' club.
Another suggestion or two: Highlight a few success stories of activities that went well during
the past year— put them in front of the entire Forum group before breakout sessions to start
the collaborative juices flowing.
The lunch activity can be both social to get to know others, but also a task or question to ask.
Put a different question at each table for students to work on: Examples:
1. How does meeting people outside your usual group work at your school? What can
we do to make it work better?
2. Finish the statement: "we at High School value at our school.
Follow up question: How do we show that we value
3. What is difficult at your school? What would make it easier?

Then those at the table talk about how to work it out. Create collaboration.
Scott Herdegen contacted Columbia HS and Kuna HS to gather their feedback on the Green
Dot initiative. Columbia (in Nampa) did a small version with a School Resource Officer, but
discontinued the program after he left. Kuna appears to have kept it going, but little
information. Scott stated that it looks like a worthy program, but it may have a stiff price tag.
He also commented that we are already walking the same road with the Youth Forum, but
without the pricey tag. Are there aspects of the program that can enhance what we are
already doing? Are there other resources out there that can enhance what we are doing?
Toni stated that we often look to others for information because they have the research. In this
instance, we are doing the research by talking to the students and enhancing the programs
based on that communication. Toni, through ICDD, may know of a link to Green Dot and will
see if she can find a point of contact who may be willing to come and talk about the program at
our next meeting.
Our next meeting is March 5, 2019 at Canyon Springs High School (10:00 am). Angie will
contact Kelly Culver to confirm that this works for CSHS.
Donna motioned/Angie seconded the motion to adjourn at 11:07am.
Respectfully submitted,
Angie Point
