New Business:
• Kyle Keller has expressed interest in becoming a member of the golf board. He recently moved to the area
with his family. Zach Wagoner will extend an invitation to Kyle to join us at the next scheduled meeting in
April where the board can get to know him better. On February 26th,Kyle accepted the invitation and will plan
to attend the next meeting.
• Bill#58 regarding the structure and functions of the Golf Board has proposed changes that have been
discussed and proposed by the board. The changes include suggesting an additional board member which
would be the adult serving as the President of the Caldwell Junior Golf Association. This would be more in
line with the current structure that includes representation from the Men's and Women's associations. Having
this representation would assist in coordination of Junior golf activities with the courses and leadership.
Additionally, the board meeting calendar would be adjusted slightly to include moving the final meeting of the
calendar year to the month of October(third Wednesday). This move would allow for more timely review of
the golfing season and planning for the next. A motion to accept the changes and additions to the ordinance
for the golf board(Bill#58) and forward to the City Council for approval was made by Shirley Akagi. This
motion was seconded by Doreen Burnham. The motion carried.
• A letter of resignation from his post on the golf board was received from Wally Hammons. Wally has served
and been involved with golf in the City of Caldwell for many years and his service is truly appreciated. The
board is unanimous in its sincere appreciation to Wally for his many years of service.
Staff Reports:
Golf Professional Brett Williams reported on the participation at the Golf Show held in Boise recently.
There were approximately 5,600 attending and the booth was in an ideal place near the entrance. Brett and
Pete (Director of Instruction) were there during the open hours and visited with many attendees. Brett is
very optimistic about the junior golf programming. The programming will include the PGA Juniors, First
Tee of Idaho, three LPGA programs and a number of classes and summer camps. Pete has been working
with local grade schools to promote golf and the number of offerings in Caldwell. The tournament schedule
will be finalized in the next week. Brett thanked the Women's association for turning in their schedule early.
There is a significant increase in using all forms of media for promoting the golf courses including Facebook.
The corporate outings planned will include the ones from last year with a couple of new ones added. The Pro
Shop is being inventoried and will be fully loaded. Brett is looking into options for reducing costs through
use of a free app,new logo flags with sponsors and new range balls. There should be new tee marker put into
place this season. The tee markers will change colors from red, white and blue to move further away from
the stigma of assigned tees based on gender.
Golf Professional Roger Garner reported that he received a letter from Bud Wilson requesting consideration
for money spent on golf fees last season and was not able to utilize fully for personal reasons. Bud has been a
long-time supporter of golf in the City of Caldwell. The board suggests that the letter be forwarded to the
Mayor for consideration with background information on Bud's extended relationship with the golf courses.
Roger also reported that two other regular members of the golf community recently passed. Additionally,
updates have been completed in the pro-shop at Fairview and has improved the environment noticeably.
Roger notified the Women's association that he is willing to provide a New Rules workshop to discuss the
new updates to the rules of golf. A couple of additional tournaments have been added to the schedule for
Fairview this season including a couple of Chapman events. Roger requested a clarification on a Junior golf
pass that could be utilized at both courses. This led to a lengthy discussion and request for clarification from
the City on the cost of this pass. Caldwell and Middleton HS practice and play at the courses. Roger and
Pete are working with the teams as well as introducing a program at the middle schools.
➢ Addendum: For 2019 golf season, junior golfers will be able to purchase a golf pass for both courses
in the amount of$154.24. Thank you!
Superintendent: No report this meeting
Report on Men's Association: No report at this meeting.
Report on Women's Association: Jeanne reported that the welcome back meeting is coming up in the next
week at Purple Sage. There are some new members that will be joining. As mentioned, the events are
planned and scheduled at both courses. Jeanne emphasized that the association has a core value of
comradery and social value. Finally, there was some brief discussion on the color of the flags. With the new
flags anticipated for this season,Ken will be aware of this concern. The decision of having a universal color
has been related to the time required for changing them out and the cost of the flags themselves. The score
cards will continue to show the location of the flags by three sections (front, middle and back).
City of Caldwell Report: Discussion items included in the general discussion.
General Discussion Items:
Sue Kushlan discussed the "tree-fund" which is a movement to replenish trees at Purple Sage. There are a
couple of ways to be involved. Trees can be purchased in memory of an individual. The tree will be offered
at a reduced rate ($150) and the purchaser will be included on a plaque in the club house that includes the
name of the individual and location of the tree. Individuals can also contribute to the general fund (there is
already$160 in this fund). The women's association is also promoting and providing a 50/50 raffle with
proceeds being donated to the tree fund. The superintendent will determine the type of tree, location and
time of year being planted. Members of the committee include Sue Kushlan,Vickie Chickereli and Hanne
Larsen. Brett also mentioned the golf course is also considering a tournament in the Fall to support the tree
fund and develop a scholarship for junior golf. Finally, the women's association will be doing a fund raiser at
the Men's breakfast and Women's event to provide flower baskets for the porch at Purple Sage.
