HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-02-26 CYMP Minutes Caldwell Youth Master Plan Com ttee APPROVED Tuesday, February 26, 2019 Meeting Minutes Date 5 I Co I l 9 PRESENT: Melissa Gentry,Julie Yamamoto, Courtney Frost,Tricia Combs,Jim Porter, Donna Shines, Denise Milburn, Anita Wilson, Carol Mitchell, Kelli Jenkins,Angie Point, Ron Bonneau, and Debbie Geyer Opened meeting at 10:01 am SPECIAL PRESENTATION: Julie Yamamoto—Chair of the Canyon County Branch of the Assistance League of Boise. Contact email: Juliyam57@gmail.com The Canyon County branch is starting right off with two Assistance League outreach programs that are outreaches for our area hospitals and schools, made possible through a grant from St. Luke's. • Operation Baby Bundles targets new moms and their newborns, giving a 'bundle' of newborn items(clothing, diapers, digital thermometer, vouchers for supplies, etc) and information to families in need. o St. Lukes and West Valley hospitals in Canyon County will be participating in this program. o Hospitals will review the list of items and make suggestions or approve it as-is for this area. o Donna Shines is connected with several community members that do crocheting, quilting, etc. and who would likely be happy to have an outlet for their craft. o A pre-determined number of bundles will be on-site at each hospital so that they are available when needed. The Caldwell School District has offered storage space for the remaining bundles to be stockpiled. • Operation School Bell targets school children and teens in need and provides shoes&clothing vouchers,a winter coat/hat/gloves, and a personal care kit, as well as a backpack of supplies. • The Canyon County branch is seeking volunteer members to show Canyon County's love for people by helping with these two programs. There is a membership drive meeting planned for Thursday, February 28th at 6:30pm, to be held at Ridgevue High School in Nampa. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Jim Porter motioned/Carol seconded the motion to approve the minutes of the Caldwell Youth Master Plan meeting held on October 23, 2018. Motion passed. NEW BUSINESS Update reports from sub-committee Chairs: Caldwell Youth Forum (Ron Bonneau) • Caldwell High School Youth Forum Club: Our last meeting was at CHS,where we met with a couple of the Youth Forum Club members who attended the Forum in September. The students believe that the Club is a positive influence at the school, with a variety of activities that students can interact with, or get involved in. For example: the CHS monthly kindness week is sponsored by a different club each month. Their primary goal is to break cliques and encourage communication for all, so that each student will feel free to interact with everyone, not just those in their particular clique. The students also talked about great support from the school administration in facilitating meeting times and activities. • Green Dot initiative: We have invited a speaker from the Green Dot program to our next meeting on March 5th We have heard a little about this initiative, and we are hoping to find a key idea or two that we can apply to the Forum training. • We are also working toward sharing the Forum goals with the Superintendent's office through a meeting involving Mayor Nancolas, Ron Bonneau, and Superintendent Ybarra. The Superintendent's office is excited about Caldwell's emphasis on youth and families. Kelli Jenkins mentioned "Just Serve January"—students working through 30 days of goodwill. High school and college clubs are getting involved in the community by serving their community. Kellie stated this would be good to see in our Caldwell schools. Family Fun Day via Tricia Combs: Marisa cannot attend meetings, so Tricia will be the spokesperson for this sub- committee. This year's event will be on Saturday June 8 from 9 am—12 noon. Funding for this year is through a St Luke's Grant for$1,000.00. • The Caldwell Public Library will coordinate the Chalk Art Contest. • Caldwell Housing Authority(CHA)will coordinate the Fishing Derby and the lunch. • AAFV will coordinate the Color Fun Run. • No Bubble Man this year. Instead, there will be a climbing wall activity. • The bike giveaway will be around 12:00 noon. • CHA has a kiddie train to loan, but will need volunteer drivers. • Ken Wien will be helping coordinating signage and setup. • Boys and Girls Club will host an Arts and Crafts table. • Kelli Jenkins may be able to help with finding volunteers and possible donations for the lunch food items. Tricia could use a few more volunteers for the color run. Caldwell Saves First (Carol Mitchell): We are gearing up for another session, and are coordinating with the YMCA during their fun run and their pre- rodeo activities to promote Caldwell Saves First classes for parents and kids. The last group that signed up for classes followed through to the end and were able to get the initial promotions for their student accounts. They are now eligible for the yearly incentives. Some fundraising is usually done during the Mayors Scholarship Golf Tournament. Golf friends donate items for a basket to be given away after the tournament. Golfers 'feed the pig' a donation amount at a hole, and receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win the basket. We would like to find grant funding to offer more college savings account start-ups($20 per student)to more students. We the Family(Fiona May): Fiona was not able to attend the meeting and sent the following update separately: SUCCESSES: • Social media postings are generating interest; Facebook page audience is growing. • The most popular Facebook post was information about free pumpkins available the week before Halloween—viewed by over 17,000 Facebook users. • The banner over Cleveland Blvd has given great visibility to the project. CHALLENGES: • Few events are posted on the web page (https://www.cityofcaldwell.org/live/youth-master-plan/we-the- family. Events happen, but if they're not submitted to the City's online calendar, they don't get listed. • Updating the web page is not easy to do. Lisa (Fire Dept) and Fiona are feeling they are at their limit for having the time to find and add events and resources to the We the Family pages. • Facebook is not as popular as it once was; having 400 page likes out of a Caldwell population of over 50,000 isn't great OPPORTUNITIES • There are some proposals for ways We the Family can provide additional opportunities for families to connect with each other, with low-cost events, and with resources that might be of interest. • If you have information or links to resources that can be posted on the We the Family page, please email them to: WeTheFamily@cityofcaldwell.org. Ron: The College of Idaho is looking for opportunities for interns now and possibly through the summer. The desire is for students to be involved with their community. Contact Ron (208-459-5863), or Jennifer Riddle (Outreach Coordinator—208-459-5688) if you know of opportunities for student interns. Donna: The Mentoring Network can always use mentors—the recent Idaho Press article about Frank Wyant and his mentee has helped bring in a few more mentors, but the need is still great. Donna moved, Ron seconded the motion to adjourn the meeting at 11:09am. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at 11:00(time change for this meeting only) in the CPD Community Room, 110 S. 5th Avenue in Caldwell. Respectfully submitted, Angie Point
