HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-10-02 Caldwell Youth Forum Minutes APPROVED Caldwell Youth Forum Subcommittee Minutes — October 2, 2018 Date /7 CQ Present: Ron Bonneau, Donna Shines, Toni Brinegar, Kelly Culver, Laurie Wood, Laura Allen-Wade, Angie Point, and Cindy Jordan. Ron welcomed Laura Allen-Wade, Counselor at Middleton Academy. Laura will be able to participate in planning for the 2019 Youth Forum, and will plan to bring five students to the event. Ron gave a summary of the goals of the Forum: big picture is to address how we can collaborate and find resources to give kids what they need to succeed in the educational realm so that they own who they are and where they are going. Involvement in the process and the solution keeps students from just following the status quo. Donna motioned, and Angie seconded the motion to approve the minutes from the CYF meeting on July 10, 2018. Motion passed. To save a little time during regular meetings, the meeting minutes from the previous meeting will now be sent for review at the same time the meeting agenda is sent to subcommittee members --typically the Friday before each scheduled meeting. Meeting minutes will first be sent to subcommittee members 1 week to 10 days after each regular meeting to allow necessary coordination or completion of assigned tasks before the next scheduled meeting. Students were very responsive to Bukky's video welcome from Howard University, and thanks to Jeff and Adam, it worked well. There was some discussion regarding bringing another past Forum student to do a similar introduction at the 2019 Forum. Kelly Emry was not able to attend, but he sent the results of a survey used with the students who attended the Forum from Vallivue HS this year: • Most enjoyed meeting new people from other schools and socializing; all felt the Forum is worthwhile and VHS should continue to participate • Takeaway: "Everyone matters, people should be open and make positive change" • Suggestions: more socialization time, have a list of a few `sample' group activities available for individual clubs (a starting point), explain a little more about what the day is about to students ahead of time. Ridgevue takaway: definitely worth it— very positive about the day, no real negatives; they especially enjoyed the Playfair activities. Students came up with some great ideas during the breakout sessions to work on. The first 'Ractivist' meeting after the Forum was standing room only (80 students total). One of the first things they did upon returning to school was to add a positive quote for the day during announcements. They are also `catching' students doing something good and finding ways to give them recognition. Counselors mentioned that students were very engaged after the Forum in discussing possible scenarios for implementing positive messaging at their schools. Canyon Springs HS and COSSA connected during the breakout sessions near the end of the day and are continuing that connection through collaboration of similar projects at their respective schools. 1 Page Ron asked if there might be a way to get the State School Superintendent — Sherri Ybarra — involved. We have a unique program, and if there is enough interest at the state level, perhaps it could be packaged as multiple, state-wide Youth Forum events, possibly all on the same day all over the state. We have the model to share. Donna will connect with someone she knows to see if there is a possibility of state involvement/buy-in. The question was asked "How big can this get (i.e. how many students are too many"? Laura thought Middleton High School would benefit, and Kelly Culver mentioned that Elevate Academy would be up and running by the next Forum, and would likely want to be involved. Ron will bring it up at the next Youth Master Plan meeting. Budget: The updated budget sheet was reviewed with a current 2018 Forum budget deficit of $273.10. LoveCaldwell has pledged a donation of $250, leaving a net deficit of $23.10. Once all donations and expenses are accounted for, a final budget sheet will be sent to sub-committee members. It is expected that the final balance in the Youth Forum account on December 31, 2018 will be $506.31. Ron passed out proposed meeting dates for the 2019 calendar year, with Wednesday, September 11, 2019 identified as the next Caldwell Youth Forum event date. No conflicts noted. Toni moved, and Donna seconded the motion to approve the 2019 meeting calendar as submitted. Motion passed. The meeting was adjourned at 11:15 am. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at 10:00 am at Vallivue High School. Respectfully submitted, Angie Point 2IPage
