Date L4 I Special Presentation: donna Shines, Mentoring Network Definition: Mentoring is someone looking out for you, caring, sharing their experience and care with you. 'My person who guided me here'. The Mentoring Network concept started in 1999. Three years later, there was a mentoring grant award for 3 years; this is when mentoring started happening. When Donna became the director, the questions were 'is money really the barrier? When the grant runs out, how do we keep it goingi?' Donna began to train and utilize volunteers in the schools, and tries herself to be involved in something in each town. Early on there were 17 schools, and 24 kids. Now there are 107 Ikids and 5 school districts. The goal is for mentors to come alongside long term, because it is most impactful long term. In 2005, the Mentoring Network became a non-profit. The focus is to build relationships — no money or time for events. Still ongoing — still works. We all need someone that cares. If a child stays with a mentor, 100% graduate high school. 99% of mentored kids stay out of the juvenile justice system. Can change the world with 1 hour a week face to face with, a child. • At risk students are the target group. o Longevity and consistency build trust with kids. It's on us to make a difference in kids' lives. Best outcome (what does GREAT look like): Our greatest impact as a community will come when we have a culture of mentoring in our community—adults and kids. Donna motioned and Carol seconded the motion to accept the minutes from the Feb 27, 2018 Youth Master Plan meeting, Motion carried. Committee Reports: 1.
