Caldwell Youth Forum Subcommitte .. .. ,,,
Meeting Minutes January 9, 2018 ate ., .
Present: Toni Brinegar, Ron Bonneau, Donna Shines, Angie Point, Brandy Smith, Brooke
Winston, Kelly Emry, Steve Jenkins, Kelsey Ferro (CHS student), and Tony (CHS student)
Ron Bonneau began the meeting at 10:12 am.
Donna motioned/Toni seconded the motion to approve the minutes from the November 11,
2017 subcommittee meeting. Motion passed.
Ron gave a brief summary of a presentation that took place in November at the Youth Master
Plan meeting. The presentation focused on trauma, its effects on resilience, and a new
assessment tool/initiative (Y.E.S.-Youth Empowerment Services) promoted by Health and
Welfare that will begin implementation late January.
Kelly Emry gave an update on the success of the Vallivue Youth Forum students' `Bucks for
Beanies' project. They raised $187, and bought 187 beanies to give to the homeless shelter.
Scott motioned/Toni seconded to adjourn meeting at am. The next meeting will be Tuesday
at 10am.
Kelsey and Tony gave a quick synopsis of their thoughts on the Forum last fall.
Kelsey: A good opportunity to meet up with students from other schools in the valley,
and a good bonding exercise. She and Tony would both have liked more time at the end for
the round table discussions, and conversations with more people. They would also have liked
it to go longer. What she took away from it: She felt more open to others situations — not so
quick to jump to conclusions in her perceptions; more willing to look for positive ways to impact
those around her. She feels there are not so many cliques — much more atypical mixing and
mingling than before.
Tony: The Forum seemed a little rushed compared to the previous year, the message
is worth a little more time. He suggested a few hours on another day to meet up with students
from the other schools to bounce ideas around and keep the energy going. Maybe something
like an after-school coffeshop mixer— selective invitations to each school.
Tony: From last year to this year, morale is better because of the students who
attended the last 2 years —fewer confrontations and language seems less offensive overall;
most students are more open to different groups — more diverse friendship groups.
Ron commented that it was good to hear of the positive change, and charged Brooke to
encourage the buy-in from other faculty and administration to keep it happening.
Wednesday, September 12, 2018 is the confirmed date for this year's Youth Forum. Time to
think about our them: leave it as it is, or change it up a little?
Toni: "We choose all of us". This is an Idaho coalition available to high school
students, and belonging to the community. There is a poster series that students see at school
that could tie into some part of the Forum day. Toni will check with them on whether there is
an option to use their logo for our central theme.
Toni motioned and Donna seconded the motion to adjourn the meeting at 11:12 am. Our next
meeting will be Tuesday, March 13, 2018, 10:00 am, at Gem State Academy, 16115 S.
Montana Ave, Caldwell.
Respectfully submitted,
Angie Point
