Caldwell Youth Forum Subcommittee Mee iffg—, 9c)
Meeting Minutes
November 21, 2017 Date 2,
Present: Kelly Emry, Donna Shines, Toni Brinegar, Brandy Smith, Laurie Waood, Scott
Herdegen, and Angie Point.
Ron began the meeting at 10:13 am. Angie motioned/Donna seconded the motion to accept the
minutes from September 26, 2017. Motion passed. Angie will also send new meeting calendar,
updated roster, and a copy of the proposed 2018 budget to those committee members unable to
attend the meeting.
Ron welcomed Amber Dillon (Counseling intern at VHS), as well as Ibrahim Tall and Zach Hoag,
student representatives from VHS. He then asked the students to report on activities at VHS that
have come out of what was taken away from this year's Forum:
• 'It's On Us' Club —they meet every Monday; about 15 active members, including Zach who is
very active, but has not had opportunity to attend the Forum. Goal is to promote a community
where everyone has a place. Projects:
o Bucks for Beanies: $1 paid to club by students that allow them to wear hats on particular
days. Goal is enough to buy 500 hats for the Boise Rescue Mission ministries.
o Social media — Instagram account: itsonus—vallivue
o New student ambassadors: help new students integrate into VHS life, help them feel
welcome, sit with them at lunch, find out interests and introduce them to other like-
minded students and clubs they can connect with.
o May look at updating the "It's On Us" video using VHS students.
• Donna asked 'what is different at Vallivue since you have begun these projects?' Ibrahim
stated that the change is within himself— 'I strive to be more positive, so have more positive
influences on those around me—my community—that I interact with.' Ibrahim also said that he
was most impacted by the speeches at the end of the day when student groups were sharing
ideas of how to bring the message to others at their schools.
Other discussion among committee members revolved around the possibility of incorporating
resiliency and effects of trauma resources into the Forum day. Ron reminded everyone that the
Youth Master Plan meeting on November 28th would be featuring two presentations on resiliency
and effects of trauma. There will also be discussion and information about a state-wide
assessment tool, and incorporating resources to address needs the assessments may identify.
Angie or Ron will make the presentations available to committee members after the meeting on the
28 th
The Committee also discussed the need for an after-event survey to garner responses from
students to the day's programming — perhaps a Survey Monkey survey sent to students at school
email addresses, or questions posted on Social Media asking for student input.
Angie asked that committee members consider who might be a good fit to be the media contact for
future Forums to initiate contact with news media before the event for media coverage. Ron
indicated that there might be someone at the College, and others are welcome to volunteer.
Toni motioned/Kelly seconded the motion to adjourn the meeting at 11:21 am. The next meeting
will be on Tuesday, January 9,2016 at Gem State Academy, 16115 S. Montana Ave. in Caldwell
Respecfully submitted,
Angie Point
