Caldwell Youth Forum Subcommittee
Meeting Minutes July 18, 2017
Present: Ron Bonneau, Kaylee Farrell, Toni Brinegar, Kelly Culver, Jim Porter, Donna
Shines, Josh Williamson, and Angie Point.
Ron Bonneau began the meeting at 10:07 am. Donna Shines motioned/Angie Point
seconded the motion to approve the minutes from the May 9, 2017 subcommittee meeting.
Motion passed.
Details confirmed for upcoming Youth Forum on Wednesday, September 13, 2017:
• "It's On Us" theme for the t-shirt design will remain the same; the College of Idaho's "It's
On Us" video will be part of the introduction of the day after registration.
• Bukki Ogunrinola will again 'pre-load' the day for the students after the initial welcome
by either the Mayor or a City Council member.
• Donations from businesses and community organizations are still coming in (see
attached budget sheet); we are close to meeting our $4,500 budget. Love Caldwell is
joining the donor list today to help fund the Forum event—thank you!
• Attached is the current sponsor flyer. Angie is asking that each subcommittee member
please print a flyer or two, take them to nearby business(es) and ask for 'freebies' to put
in the student registration bags. Stinker has committed to providing hot/cold mugs for
each student, and Angie usually is able to get free coffee cards from the Human Bean
and Dutch Bros. We will have approximately 75 students, so any donation is greatly
appreciated; please do what you can.
• In the past, CHS and VHS have alternated each year in arranging for a bus to pick up
students from these two schools. This year it is CHS's turn to arrange transportation.
• Angie will ask Geoff Starr if Gem State would have room in their bus for 6 from Vallivue
Academy and 6 from Canyon Springs HS.
• Question for CHS: is the portable stage available for this year's Forum?
• Ron has a contact that will bring an ACE very short assessment that the students can
complete before/while eating lunch. Data will be used to fine tune themes and activities
for future Youth Forum events.
• Toni will make table tents to put on lunch tables for conversation starters.
• Tara will be again presenting her story after lunch; AAFV will facilitate debriefing
session afterwards.
• Ron will coordinate with the Playfair facilitator to put students in gender-specific groups
of 8 before lunch. These groups will be their 'lunch team'; AAFV will also provide
gender specific talking points and have advocates (some will be subcommittee
members) at each table to help with debriefing students.
• Angie will confirm with Cherie Staples if Tony (One of the CHS students who presented
at the April 17, 2017 City Council meeting) would be willing to wrap things up for the
students at the end of the day.
• Make sure the press is invited – Caldwell Perspective, Idaho Education News, Idaho
Press Tribune, College of Idaho, etc.
• Angie has student attendee lists from Vallivue HS, Ridgevue HS, and Gem State
Academy. Still need names from Caldwell HS as soon as possible. COSSA,
Canyon Springs HS, and Vallivue Academy will need to forward names to Angie
by the third week of August if at all possible.
• Attached is the proposed schedule for the Forum day.
Ron summarized information he has recently received about resilience and toxic stress—how
stress affects students today. The "Paper Tigers" videos on YouTube are one of the avenues
that identify toxic stress and it's effects on the developing brain and behavior of students.
"Miss Kendra curriculum" is a follow-up video. Ron would like the subcommittee members to
review the information to determine if we want to incorporate any of it into a future Youth
Forum. We have been able to identify issues in schools, but how can we address the
underlying cause—and is the cause toxic stress? Ron knows someone with resources on
resilience and stress that he could contact for more information on identifying the underlying
problem. This might be a way to build more mindfulness into the Forum.
Toni Brinegar motioned/Donna Shines seconded the motion to adjourn the meeting at 11:15
am.
The next meeting will be Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at 11 am for a pre-event walk through.
We will meet at the JA Activity Center on The College of Idaho campus, followed by lunch at
the Simplot Dining Hall after the walk through.
Respectfully submitted,
Angie Point
