HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-04-25 YMPC Minutes Caldwell Youth Master Plan Committee [../27 OVED I April 25, 2017 Meeting Minutes Present: Nora Carpenter (United Way Treasure Valley), Ron Bonneau, Jose Valle, Denise Milburn, Liz Godina, Jim Porter, Sharon Porter, Ken Wien, Laurie Wood, Josh Williamson, Marisa Erickson, Colleen Plitt, Donna Shines, Carol Mitchell, Debbie Geyer, and Angie Point. Meeting began at 10:04am Donna Shines motioned/Carol Mitchell seconded the motion to accept the minutes from July 12, 2016. Motion passed. Special Presentation: Nora Carpenter, United Way Treasure Valley • P-16 update: Nora gave a brief summary the history and purpose of P-16, and highlighted the initiatives and positive results that came out of it: o 2012: Significant increase in graduation rates and number of students going on to college. o 2014: Caldwell HUB (now Canyon County HUB) created, giving people a place to come together and connect resources. o 2015: Caldwell Saves 1st and BankOn programs with college savings initiatives • Community Schools: o 2016: Community School preparation at Sacajawea Elementary o 2017: Community School strategy launch. First priority: "what is in the best interest of the child?" ■ Families need access to resources: • Health &dental services • Behavioral & mental health services • Food • Community School is perceived as a way to provide resources within the neighborhoods, centered around the neighborhood school • Attachment 1 is a copy of the slide Nora showed illustrating how the school could be used to house resources. • Hortensia Hernandez will be the Community School Coordinator to refine and identify first- year systems and build the program. Reports and Updates: Caldwell Youth Forum — Ron Bonneau Ron discussed the high school presentations given at the April 17th City Council meeting. Vallivue High School, Caldwell High School, and Gem State Academy students created presentations that outlined the steps each student-led group had taken to positively impact their school cultures. All of the group efforts are a result of the desire to take the message of the Youth Forum back to their own schools. Let's Move! Caldwell — Marisa Erickson • Meet Me Monday kick off is Monday, May 8th. We will be meeting at 5:15pm at Stewart's Bar and Grill on Blaine. Process is simple: show up, sign in, and walk. o Once downtown construction is completed, we will probably move the meeting spot to downtown. o Brian Billingsley has several historical walking tours completed and in process. We will use these as route options from time to time. • Caldwell Family Fun Day is scheduled for Saturday, June 10th (also Idaho's Free Fishing Day) in Whittenberger and Rotary Pond parks. Several events are on the schedule: o Kids Fishing Derby— Caldwell Rotary — all may fish; prizes for kids 12 and under o Junior Color Run —AAFV—all may participate; prizes for 17 and under. o Chalk art content— Caldwell Library o Archery instruction and target practice —Archery Central Families can sign up at City Hall and the Parks and Rec office, or sign up on-line (tickets are free) at www.eventbrite.com/e/caldwell-family-fun-day-tickets-33431882661 • Screen-Free Week' May 1st—7th • May 3`d: `Don't Sit, Be Fit' day Caldwell Saves 1st—Carol Mitchell and Debbie Geyer The final piece of the program for families is the Family Financial Fair on May 6th. This is a community event, all are welcome. Debra Sousa from the Family and Child Alliance put it together as an open house-style financial literacy event. Flyers advertising the event will be sent to committee members later this week. New Business: None At our next meeting, Jim and Sharon Porter will be giving a presentation on Love Caldwell, and Compassion Caldwell. Ken Wien motioned/Josh Williamson seconded the motion to adjourn the meeting at 10:58 am. Motion passed. The next meeting will be Tuesday, June 27th at 10:00 am in the Caldwell Police Dept Community Room, 110 S. 5th Ave. Respectfully submitted, Angie Point
