Caldwell Youth Forum Subcommittee Meeting
Meeting Minutes January 24, 2017
Present: Gem State Academy student attendees: Alexa Davidson, Montanna Gross, Kelton
Turner. Ron Bonneau, Josh Williamson, Geoff Starr, Steve Jenkins, Toni Brinegar, Angie Point
Meeting began at 10:10am. Angie motioned/Geoff seconded the motion to accept the minutes
from November 15, 2016. Motion passed.
Review 2017 Forum Budget
Angie reported that the budget for the coming year will be very similar to last year. The number of
students may increase by approximately 15 to 20, which will also increase the meal cost. The
2016 sponsors are expected to provide donations in 2017 similar to those received for the past
Forum, so the proposed budget will be the same as well -- $4,300.
The Railroad Grant applied for in September was denied, so no funds coming from that avenue.
The Idaho Transportation Department is offering grants to programs that focus on highway safety,
distracted driving, etc.
Student Input
The Gem State students shared that their efforts after the Forum began as promoting a team of
student advocates who would look for ways to accent the positive – `speak life'. Their goals:
• Accent positive communication: one way is to repost positive social media posts (posted by
students) to the school social media page and let parents know about it
• Make school more of a community—more inclusive, less exclusive, less gossip
• Reach everyone – don't leave anyone out
o 'warm fuzzies' delivered near the library
o Food drive to benefit Oasis Food Banks
o Valentine delivery service
• Create positive atmosphere where bullying can't happen
• What needs to change:
o Address 'outcasting' – make groups inclusive—all welcome
o Address students `putting themselves down' – build self esteem
Right now, there are 5-8 students actively participating in these efforts.
Toni commented that what she often hears is that students need to change 'the voice in my head'.
She also mentioned that there is a Core Gifts Assessment that addresses self-esteem, 'who am I',
`respect me for who I am' issues.
Toni motioned/Steve seconded to adjourn the meeting at 11:08am. The next meeting will be on
Tuesday March 14 at 10 am at Caldwell High School, 3401 S Indiana Ave, Caldwell.
Respectfully submitted,
Angie Point
