Impressions from school staff of how the Forum impacted their students:
• Geoff Starr (Gem State) said his students loved every part of the day, very enthusiastic and
motivated to meet after the event to plan how to bring the message of the Forum to their
school. They would have liked a little more time at the end of the day when individual
schools met to discuss ideas of how to take this to their own schools. Geoff also thought
more table discussion after Tara's presentation might have been a good 'mini-training' time.
• Kelly Emry (Vallivue) said his students continued discussion on the bus ride back to school.
When they returned to school, 8 of them met and created a 'Youth Forum Club' and were
generating project ideas for the rest ofthe year. The Seniors in the group are planning a
presentation on October 19th to the Freshman, Junior, and Senior classes (Sophomores will
be taking the PSAT).
• Kelly also said he would like to see a little more training—take advantage of the sense of
community and acceptance at the end of the morning activities and go deeper on courage,
standing up for what's right, etc. Noah Palmer (AAFV) suggested education 'snippets' that
could happen throughout the day. Steve Jenkins (CWI) suggested a "Know your Why"
(video series) approach to training students in how to impact their communities.
• Brandy Smith (COSSA) said students will be meeting together to continue discussions
began at the end of the Forum day. Enthusiasm is good, and students were glad they had
attended.
• A representative from Caldwell High School was not able to come to the meeting.
New Business:
1. Proposed date for the 2017 Caldwell Youth Forum is Wednesday September 13, 2017
2. Josh Williamson will look into the possibility of holding an overnight event using a YMCA
facility/camp. More discussion to follow at later meetings.
3. We have been given the go-ahead to reach out to the Middleton Alternative School (Atlas
High School), Thomas Jefferson,Charter School, and Ridgeview High School and ask if they
would like to be a part of next year's Youth Forum. If they agree to participate, they will
provide a point of contact from their school to attend the Youth Forum Subcommittee
meetings and help with planning next year's event.
4. Reminder to schools that attended this year: project summary presentations will be due by
April 15th, and presented at the following City Council meeting.
Josh motioned/Brandy seconded to adjourn the meeting at 11:10am. The next meeting will be
Tuesday November 15, 2016 at 10:00 am at Vallivue High School, 1407 E. Homedale Rd.
Respectfully submitted,
Angie Point
