Staff Reports:
Golf Professional John Watson reported that the course continues to be in exceptional condition. The
past few years have demonstrated a slow, but steady increase in the number of golf rounds played at
Purple Sage. June 1SL,2015 through May 31St, 2016 had approximately 35, 000 rounds played. This has
slowly increased from a low of approximately 30, 000 during the same time frame in 2009-2010. The
greatest challenge continues to be competition with so many courses in the area.
Unfortunately, the Memorial Day Match Play event was forced to be canceled related to lack of
sponsorship money. There was not a full field signed up,but enough for a first time event. However, the
needed sponsorship money was not there. In the future, the Men's Association may consider putting
together this tournament.
The board then discussed potential revenue opportunities including green fees. The consensus of the
board was that the annual pass sales continue to be a real draw, but increasing the cost may deter some
pass holders from renewing. In lieu of this, consideration was given to making a slight increase in daily
green fees. The following motion on a recommendation was made:
"The golf board recommends a$1 (one dollar) increase to daily green fees for rounds Monday through
Thursday and twilight. No change to current rates for Friday rounds. And, $2 (two dollars) increase for
rounds on Saturday and Sunday. No change to the current annual pass rates (early bird special at$499 and
$599 standard." Motion made by Wally Hammons and seconded by Shirley Akagi. Motion passed.
Report on Women's Association No Report, however, Shirley Akagi reported that the Women's
Association is requesting that yardage markers set at Fairview Golf Course. This message will be deferred
to Ken Wheeler for consideration.
Report on Men's Association: Steve Archuleta reported that the Men's Association was disappointed that
the Memorial Day Match Play event had to be canceled. The Men's Association will be meeting to discuss the
possibility of putting together the tournament for next year.
Other Business: Shirley Akagi spoke with Golf Professional Roger Garner about Fairview Golf Course prior to
the meeting and reported on the following items: A member interested in purchasing an annual pass inquired
as to whether a "Half Season Pass" could be made available. The consensus of the board was that there is not
an option for a half season pass at a discounted rate. The benefit of the pass purchase is based on a full
season. A Boy Scout inquired about completing an Eagle Project at Fairview to improve the main score board.
The consensus of the board was to approve the project after a closer review of the plans could be made and
approved by the city. A shelf in the cart shed apparently collapsed and a large cart battery charger fell and
sustained a significant dent. The owner requested compensation. The board suggested that this is a legal
matter and a tort claim would need to be considered by the owner. A letter was received from Mike Hartman
(spelling unable to be determined). The letter requested his season pass be deferred to the 2017/18 season
due to a current health issue that prohibits him from playing golf at this time. The board suggests that the
pass be deferred for one year—specifically, the pass would be valid June 15, 2017 through the rest of that
season. Regular green fees would be paid for any rounds between now and then. Finally, Dave Smith
submitted a letter requesting that the current deferment of his season pass to the 2017 season be re-instated
for this season. After discussion,Shirley Akagi made a motion that the pass be reinstated effective
immediately and be good for the 2016 (current)season and the previous deferment be revoked. The motion
was seconded by John Klockentager. The motion passed.
The board discussed the letter from Mayor Nancolas, and other city and golf board officials to golfers
addressing the high quality and value of golf in Caldwell and treating golf staff with courtesy and respect.
Adjournment:
John Klockentager moved to adjourn the meeting at 9:10 AM, and Wally Hammons seconded the motion,
motion carried. The meeting was adjourned. Next meeting will be August 17th, 2016 at 8:00 AM.
Respectfully Submitted,
Chuck Bosen
