Meeting Minutes May 10, 2016
Present: Brandy Smith, Toni Brinegar, Scott Herdegen, Ron Bonneau, Josh Williamson, Kelly
Emry, Steve Jenkins, Angie Point
Meeting began at 10:10 am. Toni motioned/Brandy seconded the motion to accept the minutes
from March 17, 2016. Motion passed.
Those present all thought the feedback received from CHS students at the March meeting was
both helpful and eye-opening. We want the Forum to present useful topics and activities to meet
students where they are and help them get to where they think they should be.
Kelly Emry posed the question: "What can kids take back to campus? How can they use what
they experience?" We want to build up leaders, and share success stories. Clubs are how kids
get involved. If administration were to select one student from each club to attend the Forum, this
will make an impact in each club. Peers are coming back from the Forum to a smaller group they
are familiar/comfortable with.
Goal is to use the 'not just a bystander' theme to promote diversity and acceptance through
focusing on commonalities rather than differences.
Ron showed the "It's On Us" video that the College of Idaho students produced, and proposed that
the Forum attendees be part of an integrated schools 'It's On Us' video promoting the goals
mentioned above. We could use Playfair activities to plant the idea, and a College of Idaho intern
to do the filming. Each student could have a small part, or a representative sample of students
from each school could be the faces. All students would be in final shot of the video as members
of the Caldwell Community—not just separate entities, but representing all the high schools
working together. Angie will look into whether there might be copyright issues in using the logo or
video theme.
It was suggested that at some point in the day, we show the C of I video to students and ask them
to pull out something meaningful to them. Maybe during or just after lunch?
Ron will check on video production timeframes and possibilities to shoot the video during the
Forum.
Toni/Scott mentioned that the Forum doesn't transition well from morning activities to afternoon
activities. Students don't know why they are here. Suggested we gather students in the practice
gym before Playfair starts and ask Donna Shines to "pre-load" the purpose of the day for students.
For the other sessions, there was some discussion on how high school students often feel "ten feet
tall and bulletproof". Toni said there is someone willing to tell her story of how poor choices and
alcohol use led to rape. Two-fold message would be: "It's on us to make healthy choices" and "It's
on us to keep.friends safe". There will probably be a need to 'pre-load' this session as well.
Scott also suggested showing a short"how to start a movement" video as a lead-in to
bystander/it's on us topics. It was also suggested that some of the college's athletes could help
with `around the table' discussions during lunch. Toni would be willing to provide conversation
starters (on cards) for each table to facilitate. At the next meeting, we will be firming up what the
day's activities will be and where they will fall on the schedule. Angie will bring a very tentative
schedule that everyone can mark up as needed.
Angie brought up fundraising efforts. As of the date of the meeting, Air Comfort has donated $500,
and Stinker Stores has donated 75 hot/cold mugs for registration bags. A couple of other
businesses/organizations have stated they will help, but have not provided details yet. The
Mayor's Community Fund has allocated $2,500.00, which will pay for Playfair activities.
Fundraising needs to cover everything else. Ken Wein is following up with organizations and
businesses that were sent donation requests in March.
Subcommittee members are encouraged to take a flyer to a business owner they are connected
with and ask if they can help. The total amount needed to finance this year's Forum is $4185.00.
There is a small amount ($360.21) left from last year's Forum that we can also use.
Meeting ended at 11:15am. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday July 19th at 10am in the
YMCA conference room.
Respectfully submitted,
Angie Point
