HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-02-23 YMPC Minutes Caldwell Youth Master Plan Committee Meeting Minutes 2-23-2016 Present: Debbie Geyer, Angie Point, Ron Bonneau, Anita Wilson, Marisa Erickson, Liz Godina, Mike Davidson, Ross Garven, Kelly Emry, Tony Snider, Brent Watson, Dawna Laird Meeting called to order at 10:04 am. Welcome to Kelly Emry from Vallivue High School. Special Presentations: • Tony Snider and Brent Watson with a presentation on Cyber Safety. Tony and Brent.are School Resource Officers with the Caldwell School District and provide education on the evolution of social media and the dangers/pitfalls that unwary teens can fall into, as well as classes on Internet Safety and making smart choices when using social media. Tony and Brent are available to provide presentations to school groups, youth groups, parent groups, and any other interested parties. Scheduled trainings and links to more information are posted on the Caldwell Cyber Safety Facebook page. • Mike Davidson and Ross Garven with Canyon County Probation. They operate in a support capacity with all Probation Officers: o Working to build community partnerships to help with early intervention to change potentially unhealthy direction kids are going. Get kids involved in positive activities—less likely to be involved in `troubled' behavior if have something meaningful to be part of. o Working now with teen healthy relationships groups, kids, families, Community Working Hub organization. o Strive to provide reachable goals for kids on probation, as well as foster activities that give back: mow a yard, Canyon County Bike Project, other as-yet-unidentified projects. Take kids to apply for a job, etc. ■ Would like ideas from the community for community service projects or other`give-back" activities. o They use the golf program as a vehicle for teaching some life skills – especially in teaching how to think through decisions. Once the special presentations were finished, Anita Wilson motioned and Kelly Emry seconded the motion to accept the minutes from the 10-27-2016 Youth Master Plan meeting. Committee Reports: 1. Health &Wellness Outreach Committee – Dawna Laird • Treasure Valley Resource Fair is Wednesday April 13th at O'Conner Field House from 8am to 2pm. • Biometric Screenings will be done from 8am to 10 am o Blood screenings need to be Fasting Screenings – do not eat before you come. o Free screenings for the first 50 applicants o Only $20 for each applicant after that 2. Caldwell Youth Forum Subcommittee — Ron Bonneau Notes from the last planning meeting minutes: • Gem State Academy will be joining the Forum this year. Geoff Starr is the designated contact person for them, and Geoff has already offered a couple of suggestions to acquire needed student input. • The subcommittee is working to clearly outline the purposes of this year's Forum by talking to past attendees to find out what they see as needed tools. • The next subcommittee meeting will be on Tues March 15 at Caldwell High, 10am. • May's meeting will be at Vallivue. • ISLD did NOT award a grant for the Forum activities this year. We are contacting our past years' faithful supporters, and are looking for additional sponsors. • If you have any ideas for businesses or organizations that may be willing to help sponsor this event, please let Ron Bonneau or Angie Point know. 3. Let's Move! Caldwell Subcommittee — Marisa Erickson • Two grant requests that Let's Move! Applied for to help with funding needs were denied. Still on the lookout for grant/donation possibilities; any ideas, call Marisa. • Marisa is planning to contact Kelly Jenkins with Destination Caldwell about a community walk route/program; more on this as things start to happen. • The first Childcare workshop is coming very soon; still a few spots open to childcare workers. Council member Shannon Ozuna will be speaking as well. • Let's Move! Caldwell Fun Day: This year, we will partner with the Rotary Club's Kids Fishing Derby on May 14. o Fishing Derby in morning; Let's Move! Activities after fishing awards are done. (Rotary Pond/Park) o 1 mile walk (Story Walk with the Caldwell Public Library) o 3+ mile bike ride around the Greenbelt (Whittenberger Park) o We plan to translate the flyers into Spanish to get the word out to as many as possible. 4. Caldwell Saves 1St Holly is no longer with the City, so this program is currently on hold. Marisa Erickson motioned, and Anita Wilson seconded the motion to adjourn. Meeting was adjourned at 11:22am.
