Trees - Bobbie Rankin and Marilyn Bauman reported on a meeting with Jess Payne concerning Dutch Elm disease. No cure is known but the disease may be arrested with a treatment which costs from eight to fifteen dollars per tree. The City will be spraying for the Dutch Elm beetle which is the carrier of the disease. Bobbie further reported on meeting with Craig Barrett at the Extension Office who does not believe the disease arresting treatment mentioned above is effective. The disease is a fungus and is transmissable from wood cut from diseased trees or the cutting equipment. Therefore, it is necessary to burn wood immediately and sterilize equipment before making further cuts. Marilyn presented the Boise Ordinance on Trees and Shubbery for study by Commission members. (copy attached) A recommendation concerning such an ordinance for Caldwell will be voted on at the next regular meeting. It was decided that a tour to acquaint citizens with Dutch Elm disease and related problems would be helpful both to educate and develop awareness. Jess Payne volun- teered to lead the tour and will invite the Boise City Forester to also attend. Tour will begin at the Student Union parking lot at the College of Idaho at 9:00 A.M. on Thursday, July 15. Bobbie Rankin will contact College of Idaho personnel.
