HomeMy WebLinkAbout1978-01-16 Beautication Caldwell Community Development Commission Regular Meeting. Council Chambers January 16, 1978, 12 Noon. Present: Members : Bell, Macy, Rankin, Roelofs, Wallace Ex Officio : Bauman, Payne Guests : John Renk, Helen Ulmen, V. Pres . Forward Club. Chairman Rankin called the meeting to order at 12:08. The minutes of the Dec. 12 meeting were approved as corrected. Arboretum. No report. The meeting which failed to convene is to be re-scheduled. Members . Rankin will check on whether Ives Jones has been notified of his appointment. Planning and Zoning. It was reported that Mel Lewis said that nothing has yet been done regarding a Plan and Design Review committee for the city. Roads and Streets . Macy reported that the Chamber of Commerce has already established its list of. priorities . Bikeways. Roelofs reported on the visible physical dangers of the North Illinois bikeway. It will always collect rocks and gravel and be affected by the run-off of water. These things, in addition to two curb cuts make it a basically unsafe place to ride a bicycle. Members of the Commission asked why this has been designated a bikeway when it is neither safe nor adequate. No one could answer the question. Roelofs will visit with Paul Hale to discuss the situation. Rose Garden Wall. It was reported by Payne that he had talked to the High School art teacher who is interested in organizing students to paint out the graffitti on the Rose Garden retaining wall. The city will furnish paint and equipment. Tree Ordinance. Payne read a proposal for the cityts tree ordinance. This proposal would allow the city to remove diseased and dangerous tree stumps from private property adding the cost of removal to the tax responsibility of the owner. It was consensus of this Commission to support the proposal after it has been presented to the council. Commendations . It was moved and seconded that this Commission recommend to the city council the 2000 block on the north side of Cleveland Blvd. for improvement in overall appearance of their neighborhood, Passed. The Commission feels that it is particularly significant that a neighborhood has been able to improve itself by the painting of houses and pruning of shrubs on several properties. A general concern was expressed by Commission members that parking in this area is both inadequate and dangerous . eN Down Town. Bauman reported that she will organize a meeting of interested parties concerning corner parks on Main and Kimball. She also reported that the Union Pacific has given the go-ahead Page 2 . - - to use the railroad parking area but there seems no hope of obtaining a railroad car. Bauman will meet with Gerdes about this project. Mary Higdem of the Environmental Education Committee would like to give some local school children the opportunity to cooperate with the city in planting trees during the city' s observance of Arbor Day on April 12. Bauman asked for suggestions from Commission members about park areas in the city. The meeting adjourned at 2:00 P.M. Valeta Wallace Co-secretary
