RE: Electronic Reader Board
Dear Mr. Deide:
I am in receipt of your letter dated May 8 and the attachment showing the design of the above
referenced sign. In my telephone discussion with you, I had indicated that I did not see a problem
with the Caldwell High School sign being outright permitted because such a sign is a normal,
traditional,logical part of the operation of any school. However, it is my understanding from current
staff that any sign proposed to be erected at a school site has not been permitted unless a special use
permit was sought and approved.
I reviewed the file on the special use permit obtained by the District to construct and operate the new
high school on Indiana; unfortunately, nothing in the report or on the site plan included the
placement of a sign. Any future hearings on constructing new schools will include signage so that
no further hearings will be necessary; however, this won't be of benefit to you at this time.
Because all other school signs have had to receive special use permit approval, I have decided that
the only option for approval of your proposed sign is to take it to the Planning and Zoning
Commission as a request for special use permit. In order to be heard June 12, the legal notice must
be sent to the newspaper no later than May 16. I am willing to go ahead and get the notice in without
having your formal application in hand, if you wish to proceed with the hearing process.
Please give me a call or stop by no later noon on Friday, May 16, if you wish to proceed with being
placed on the June 12 hearing agenda.
