WO L Is I Cli- o w ir co I- a w w Y NARRATIVE ELEMENT OF SPECIAL USE PERMIT APPLICATION FOR ADDITION AND REMODEL TO SOUTHWEST IDAHO JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER August 28, 1998 The project consists of a 25,626 square foot addition to the north side of the existing 16,600 square foot single level Juvenile Detention Center. The addition has a footprint of 16,484 square feet on the ground level, with 9,142 square feet on the second level. 17,869 square feet of the total addition is designated for the detention function, while the remaining 7,757 square feet are allocated to administration and office functions. Within the addition will be housed 90 beds in 76 individual cells and a dormitory to accommodate 14 beds. Also included will be an addition of 7 offices for the Probation Program, 2 offices for the detention facility; and a meeting room; and on the second level will be space for 15 additional county offices. Remodel work in the existing building will convert the three existing sleeping pods into three classrooms and expand the admissions area. All beds will now be accommodated in the new addition. The exterior character of the addition will match that of the existing building both in materials and color. The existing paved parking areas to the west and south of the existing facility accommodate 97 vehicles, and there is 12,000 square feet of graveled area in the southeast corner of the site. The roof drainage will be handled on the site, and a new 10 foot high chain link fence will surround the detention wing of the addition, to serve as a buffer from the surrounding area. The project is a result of the successful passage of a bond issue in May, which indicates the level of perceived benefit and need to the public. Because of the nature of the functions at the existing site,which include the existing juvenile facility which has been operating for seven years and the county courthouse and adult detention facility across the street, this addition should nave no adverse affect upon the public interest.
