Committee resolved that they don't want to use "bullying as a focus for this year's Youth Forum.
Instead, they would like to focus on alcohol abuse, using peer-to-peer style communication with
C of I students as speakers.
"Playfair,"a group from NY, comes in and generates teamwork and excitement with their
dynamic speeches. They partner with Vallivue and Caldwell High Schools.
The Youth Forum Subcommittee needs additional youth volunteers.
Debbie asked Ken Wien to do a wrap up report for the Idaho Liquor Department grant for the
Youth Forum. The due date for the wrap up is October 1St, which will be shortly after the Youth
Forum.
Let's Move Committee report:Marisa was absent, but sent an email report to Debbie Geyer. She
is preparing a list of current Caldwell childcare providers and has ordered signs for goal#2. She
is looking into possible funding from Blue Cross of Idaho. The "Healthier US School Challenge"
is still pending. C of I Health Sciences professor(Mike Dilley) may partner with the
subcommittee. Will have an updated report after further communication.
Debbie reported in the email that concession stands (at O'Connor Field House and at the city
pool) have committed to offer more healthy food options. Need to get the word out that vendors
should follow suit.
Gold, silver and bronze levels of sponsorship are available (Facebook page has more
information).
Canyon Bike Project:Jim was absent, but updated Debbie that the project is still on hold due to
legal negotiations.
Caldwell Saves 1St report: Holly was hired as a Communications&Research Specialist for the
Mayor's office. She will continue to direct the Caldwell Saves 1St program. The pilot program
had a lot of great feedback. Contracts are currently being drafted through the City Attorney
(Mark Hilty) and Julie Weaver of the Office of the Attorney General.Mark Hilty is also
finishing a"Rules and Procedures"document that will be given to and signed by parents of
students who participate.
Health &Wellness Outreach Committee report: Dawna reported that the health screens at the
"information fair"were not as successful as they had hoped. They did 25 screens. Expressed
that they would like to work with Compassion Caldwell and their screening. They weren't sure
why it wasn't well-attended because it was widely publicized. Debbie suggested that there may
be a significant need for screenings for people in North Caldwell and that many don't have
insurance.Dawna mentioned that a mobile clinic is incredibly expensive, but that she will talk
to the appropriate people to see if it is a possibility.
New Business:
YMP Promises& Goals:
Promise#9: "Children and young adults will be aware of and encouraged to participate in
volunteer opportunities."
2
1) Goal#1: `Increase emphasis on the importance of civic involvement by providing more
opportunities to students and parents."
It was unanimously agreed that goal#1 is being achieved with the Mayor's Youth Advisory
Council.
2) Goal#2: "Increase the distribution of information regarding existing volunteer opportunities."
A. What programs are already in place?when asked how organizations are getting the word
out about their activities, Nancy (U of I14H) said that it is 90%word of mouth.Their website
has been frozen for several months.Josh(YMCA)said that they communicate volunteer
opportunities through job postings, they have a part time volunteer coordinator and they
post for C of I internships. Dawna (WVMCIHealth2U) said that they have a volunteer
program available to students. This is correlated through high school counselors. Students
must have a 3.0 GPA to participate.when the volunteer period is completed, the student
gets a letter of recommendation and a list of their volunteer accomplishments. Steve (CWI)
said that CWI has a community wall to distribute information and opportunities.
B. What goals need to be addressed by the YMP Committee?Holly (Caldwell Mayor's Office)
discussed the new plan for an overhaul of the city's website. It will have links to volunteer
opportunities in the community.Josh, Nancy and Dawna said that they all have
applications for volunteers and suggested a link to their respective applications. Debbie
suggested that all organizations send Holly the links to their applications so that they can
be posted on the new website.
An element of the"Caldwell Saves 1st"program is a bonus for volunteering in the
community.
Other volunteer opportunities were suggested, such as: Foster Grandparents, more exposure
of the Mentoring Network, and a business called "Score."Debbie added that there is a need
for a lot of work in nursing homes and hospice.
Due to time, Debbie moved discussion of goals#3 and#4 under promise#9 to the next (August)
meeting.
Ken Wien moved to adjourn.
The meeting adjourned at 11:28 AM.
Respectfully submitted,
Holly Cook
