Many Kudos to Collette Sanders for everything she was able to accomplish in order to set up the Let's Move Community Day on April 18th! Those that came enjoyed the activities, and for a first-year event, attendance was good. A few commented that they wished the events were centered on a few parks closer together. However, since one of the goals was to showcase our city parks, the discussion centered around how to make it easier to find the parks, and ways to encourage participants to visit as many activities/parks as they could. b. Suggestions for next year: 1. A Scavenger Hunt with specific items at specific parks 2. Signage in each participating park identifying where to gather for specific activities (especially Nature Hike and Bike Ride type activities) 3. In addition to the PDF formats for advertising, also create maps and posters in .JPEG file format so they are easy to add to Facebook, Instagram, and some of the other advertising. 4. Include the Vallivue schools in distribution of flyers about the event c. Marisa also talked to Amy Stahl (Boise Parks &. Recreation and co-chair of Let's Move! Boise. Discussion centered around ideas on funding, activities, and advertising. More later. 3. Canyon Bike Project - Jim Porter and Juvenile Justice are hoping to team up in an effort similar to Boise's Bike Project: repair, rejuvenate, and give away bikes to those that need them. Not ready for launch yet; more information should be available by the June meeting. 4. Caldwell Saves 1St- Holly Cook. a. Beginnings: The pilot project held their last of 4 financial education classes last week. Thirty-six families were invited by elementary school principals to attend. Twenty-one families elected to participate in a set of 4 once-a-week classes to learn about finances and banking opportunities. Childcare was provided free of charge by Potter's Clay, a campus ministries organization from the College of Idaho. Parents have now opened savings account for their kids, and the City will put $15 into the accounts when parents have completed the classes. ICCU,Albertson's, TVCC & IDeal donated dinners each night. There is a lot of interest in this program--from the Idaho Education News team that came to do a news spot, to business and community interest, to the excitement of parents and kids who now have savings accounts--everyone thinks this is a great program for Caldwell's kids. b. Funding: As funding grows, so will the program. At some point, there may come a time when scholarships may be available for kids to use for college that will come from business and community investment. It is recommended that, if fundraising allows, an additional $1,800 from this year's annual Mayor's Community Service Scholarship Shuffle golf tournament be set aside to fund a phase II of the pilot program that will include a larger group.
