Special Presentation: Toni Brineg r-Asset-based Community Building
Toni provided training on Asset-based Communication. Primary focus is on valuing and utilizing areas of
expertise (What are my assets? What am I good at; what CAN l do to meet goals, rather than needs-
based approaches to meeting goals. Asset-based approaches focus on positive progress and hove to keep
that process going. It is internally focused and relationship driven; goal is to motivate citizens to be
active participants.
Debbie began a discussion on whether YMPC needs to change it's designation from a government agency
to a non-profit, or 50103 or possibly a Foundation or B Corp. A different designation may serve our
purposes better, and provide better avenues for funding the events sponsored by the Committee.
Debbie also mentioned the `Creating Healthy Communities' summit corning up in Boise on April 20-2 1.
There is lots of great information here, as well as great networking possibilities.
Committee Reports:
1. Caldwell Youth Forum (lion Bonneau
a. Idaho State Liquor Division a a.rded a mini-grant to the YM P C to help fund the expenses for
this year's Youth Forum. As part of the award: 1 we must identify the sponsors of the grant on
our flyers about the event, and at some point in our day,we need to address: "how did this
activity contribute to the prevention of irresponsible use of alcohol?"
b. A second `after event' survey was sera to students electronically via Survey Monkey ey in November.
Results indicate that the tearer building exercises among the 4 different schools created an avenue for
dialogue among the students that enabled them to address the issues presented effectively as a
community of new friends rather than strangers. However, students slid not appear to notice much
difference at their schools, or that they are being invited to participate in making needed changes
because of their involvement in the Forum. There seems to be a need to have the kids identify "what
can I do in the next 30 days" . , ,or"how can I get involved" .
2. Let's Move Caldwell (Marisa. Erickson)
Let's Move! Caldwell campaign began with the presentation of a proclamation at the February 17t"
City Council Meting. Caldwell is eligible for several medals at least one in 4 out of the 5
categories), and Shannon ozuna will update the online page as we qualify for more*
a. Since April's focus is on children and children's activities, Collette Sanders is organizing an
`[Unplugged' Community day to focus o n getting kids and families outside and moving. This will
be the lick-off event for the Let's Move! Caldwell program on April 18th, incorporating
activities at several of the city parks. There will be a nature hike, pieklball, fishing at Rotary
Pond, tennis lessons, country line dancing,a BMX bike demonstration, disc golf, possibly soccer
and karate demonstrations, and more! More information will be in the Recreation guide and in
the Mayor's Spring Newsletter (should be out 1s'week of April). 'There is also a new Facebook
page (Let's Move Caldwell) that will be kept up to date on the happenings here.
b. There is also a desire to tie in the PAL center, possibly with flyers or short seminars about the
hazards of excessive screen time/media use.
3. Bank On (Holly Cook—most of the following info is taken from Holly's talking paper on the new
Caldwell Saves 1st program) The goals of the Bank On program alone were not meshing with the
May r"s desire to find a tool to encourage financial proficiency for adults and savings programs for
kids. To e t all the desired goals, an innovative partnership with our elementary schools, IDeal.
(Idaho's college savings program), Junior Achievement of Idaho, and Bankn. Treasure valley was
established to bring together organizations whose common goals are to help Idaho families to
become financially proficient, and to give our children necessary tools to obtain higher education
credentials. Enter Caldwell Sarver 1st a higher-education savings initiative for Caldwell 1-sk graders
that establishes an Ial savings account in each child's name. This account provides a real-world
example that children own to help them learn about money throughout their education years,
Parents also benefit from the program— ann Treaasure valley teaches clauses for parents to
learn about many aspects of finance and banking,
The throe goads:
1. Caldwell kids are college-bound
2. Caldwell values financial literacy
3. Caldwell community members support our kids.
The plan is to start with SO First Grade students on April 1st providing an initial deposit of$5.00.
The goal is to expand it to every Caldwell 1st grade class.
4. Community Health Fair 2015 I' awna Laird) Scheduled for April 2901 from 8-2. 'There will be
140- vendors participating, including YMCA, mentoring network, mammogram screenings, health
biom.etric screenings, housing issues, tax information, and much more. First 50 participants in the
biometric screenings will be free (must fast before the screenings). All the planning is full-steam
ahead—let's get the word out!

held at the Canyon Springs Nigh School in Caldwell.
