HomeMy WebLinkAbout11-25-2014 YMPC Minutes Youth Master Plan Committee Minutes, November 25, 2 Meeting called t0 Order at 10:00 in the CPD Community Room. Present: Debbie Geyer, Tony Ashton ■ (Teach for America), Elva Gannon (for Community Outreach Counseling), Marisa Erickson, Mitch Kre ter, Dana Laird, Ron Bonneau, Nancy Shelstad, Shannon Ozuna (City Council), Scott Hordgen, Donna Shines, Debbie Geyer,jarom Wagoner,Angie Point We were excited to also have two students attend from the Mayor's Youth Advisory Council, Isabel Robles and Jennifer Piaa. They are both students at Caldwell High, and agreed to be student representatives on the Caldwell Youth Forum sub-committee. Teach for America presentation: Because Tony had limited time available, the meeting began with a presentation by Tony Ashton with Teach for America. He provided a quick overview of their goals and programs, as well as handouts with more detailed information. Essentially, Teach for America is at non- profit organization that recruits, trains, and develops a corps of professionals who commit to teach a minimum of 2 years in lower income area schools. They are considered an `alternative teacher pipeline'. They are looking at possible partnerships with districts in the Treasure Valley, including Caldwell and vallivue school districts, Caldwell High School already has two teachers that are alumni of this program. This will be corrected and a corrected copy sent with the November meeting minutes. Donna Shines moved to approve the corrected minutes; Marisa seconded. Motion passed. Committee Reports: 1. Caldwell 'youth Forum: Minutes from the Caldwell Youth Forum meeting were available, Ron B onneau gave a fever highlights: a. The current content and format effectively meet a current need that will not be going away. Therefore, the direction, content, and format will change very little for next year's Forum. b. Duo to school-week conflicts, the sub-committee decided to move the next Forum to a Wednesday,tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, September 16th, 2015. e■ Although the schools will most likely form their lists of potential attendees in the Spring before school lets Out, students will not receive invitations until school begins in the fall and school administrations have made final decisions on who should attend. . Brandy created an online after-event survey with Survey Monkey. School administrators are asking CYF participants to complete the surveys. Brandy is compiling results as they come in. o. Debbie brought up that Ken has applied for a small grant from the liquor di icon■ if awarded, there may lie a demonstration re iuir d as part of the air ard. Tentatively, this could be added into the Forum dal right after Iunh. M i 2. Let's Move ve Caldwell Marisa Erickson) u. Marisa reported that there are four or five daycare provi hers in Caldwell who have voluntarily signed , Caldwell as a it needs to sign u officially to become "Let' Move"' city. Shannon p l is willing to set up the website. CWDHD has a wellness program that may also tie into the "Let's Move" goals. b. Potential new members to ask about being on the "Let's Move" sub-committee:mittee: Na n y Randall (CHS wellness program), Claudia (YMCA), Barbara (school nurse at C of I). Dawna Laird will be Bart of it. . The Let's Move Sub-committee will be meeting on January 27th at Loam at the SWDHD. Marisa ill send out meeting reminders/invitations to those on the sub-committee and those who are invited to be members. Bank on (Debbie Geyer/Ken Wien . Debbie is still searching for a bank willing to sign customers up for small savings account balances ($5410). She has an appointment with a new local bank that is just starting up, and it looks promising. b. Debbie is also looking at the possibility of hooking this program in with the ` o on' program's education goals. . There are Bank On classes being offered through the United Methodist Church and scheduled already. 4. Community Health Fair 2015 (Dawna.Laird) a, The Treasure valley resource Community Fair will be April 26th at the O'Connor Field House. They are adding full-spectrum blood screenings through west valley. West valley will pay for the first 50 screenings,and the cost after that will be $20. b. one of the primary concerns is getting the word out that these are fasting screenings—so no breakfast before blood is drawn, west valley will provide breakfast items after the blood draws are complete. c. Info will hopefully be on buses, Dawna will be working with Larry Gebherdt and Yetta to get the event put on calendars and social media, The City will put it in their newsletters. 5. Compassion Caldwell Community Clinic This was a success! "There were about Soo participants, along with about Soo volunteers. The biggest problem was getting the word out! They anticipate participation to grow each year as people become more familiar with the event. 6. High School Career Fair: CHS and VHS have decided to hold a career fair every other year. The next one will be in 2016. New Business Dawna Laird was approached by the Girl Scouts about the possibility of YMP Committee helping bring a strong Girl Scout presence back into Canyon County. They need help with recruiting leaders, places to meet in Caldwell, ideas on how to rebuild the program. Donna Shines will bring up the issue at the Caldwell Hub rneeLing, and will follow up on their needs. larom Wagoner moved/Shannon o una seconded to adjourn meeting at 11:1 am.
