Mayor's Update on Stimulus Package:
Mayor asked Mayor's Youth if there was anything we would like to know more
about. Nick Cain asked about the stimulus package. Sadly, Nick wasn't able to attain this
meeting and missed out on the update. Mayor informed us that The Stimulus Package
took way on February 20, 2009. For all you Government students the voting starts in the
House. After the House of Representatives approved it it was then sent to the Senate. The
Senate had only a week to look at the package, which was different than what the house
was given. There was a conference held between the House and Senate. The Senate then
had 9 hours to vote on 13 trillion dollars. How can you read a document of 1100 pages
and discuss in only 9 hours?
The BORROWED MONEY was given to each state. 5.5 billion dollars went to
transit funds; since Idaho does not have a transit system we will not get a dime. A lot of
the money is going to Shovel Ready Projects. You either lose it or use it. The State of
Idaho was "awarded" 200 million, 20 million of that will go to local entities. Out of that
20 million dollars 11.2 of it goes to Ada County alone. 9.8 million goes to the rest of the
state. 5.4 of it is for urban areas and the other 5.4 goes to rural areas. Caldwell was given
900,000 dollars, which isn't too bad. One of the dilemmas with the Stimulus Package is
that it goes to Big Cities. 70% of Americans live under a population of 500,000. As
Mayor says, "don't forget the little guys."
