Special Meeting to Discuss Oregon Trail Wagon Trai.n
Tuesday, March 2, 1993
A meeting, hosted by the Historic Preservation Commission, was held on Tuesday, March
2, 1993 at 6:00 p.m.
Present: Guest: Larry Jones, Idaho State Historical Society; Fair Board: Alma Pethtel,
Phil Sloan; Historic Commission: Chair Madeline Buckendorf, Elaine
Carpenter, Elaine Leppert, Steve Maughan; Guest: Chuck Randolph; Staff:
Dennis Crooks, Teri Ottens, Liz Yeary
Madeline opened the meeting welcoming the guests, reminding those present that with the
Oregon Trail Sesquicentennial Wagon Train due in Caldwell July 26/27, any publicity
Caldwell wishes to have connected to that event needs to be prepared as quickly as
possible.
Larry Jones gave a general overview of the current arrangements for the Wagon Train, that
it will arrive in Caldwell some time before 5:00 p.m. on Monday, July 26, and will leave
Caldwell early on the morning of July 27.
Twenty wagons are scheduled to follow the Trail, with individual horseback riders and
mules and all associated personnel. The Wagonmaster has looked at Gabiola Field and will
come back to review it again to make sure there is plenty of room for everyone. Teri
advised that tents will be permitted to camp on the field itself. The National Guard are
managing the equipment movement and backup services.
Reservations have already been made for 17 tour buses, in addition to the wagon train, at
a local ranch, which is an indication of the interest the Trail celebration isr generating.
Narional advertising begins in two weeks. He also noted that the event in Montpelier is
fully booked for the whole summer, a further sign of the expected interest in touring this
area. Idaho State Department of Tourism is providing signs for Trail locations. The
organization of the celebration is attempting to keep the Wagon Train as authentic as
possible, with the obvious commercial enterprises away from the animals. Local
commercial involvement produced in the local community will be permitted.

The Fair Board will organize entertainment for the evening, when a barbecue and campfire
are scheduled. The Board will try and tie in the entertainment with the week's Canyon
County Fair.
Dennis Crooks felt a small schematic map could be produced fairly easily identifying
historic sites and trails, and reproduced in large quantities. The Idaho Humanities
Commission will provide funding for interpretive and informational literature. The
deadline is May 15. The Idaho State Park Service will be available for interpretive
education events. The Caldwell Train Depot and the College of Idaho were suggested as
possible exhibit sites associated with the Oregon Trail. All agreed it was important for the
Chamber to be involved and get the business community involved.
There was discussion over a brochure on Curtis Park, which was being produced by the
Kiwanis organization. If possible, this will be obtained and produced prior to the event.
There was further general discussion over publicity for the City, the need for more people,
to prepare food for the barbecue, and the logistics of the wagon train.
A follow-up brown bag lunch meeting was scheduled for 12 noon on March 18th at City
Hall, to which a member of the Kiwanis, the Chamber and a downtown representative
should be invited.
The meeting adjourned at 7:15 p.m.
