HomeMy WebLinkAbout11-10-1990 MAYOR'S YOUTH COUNCIL � � CALDWELL MAYOR'S COMMITTEE FOR THE F�+�lPLOYMENT OF PERSONS WITH DISAHILITIES AND OLDER WORKERS Meeting of November 10, 1990 Present: Dennis Crooks, Sandy Burmister, Floyd Roades, Gwynne Brady, Teri Ottens, Claire Roper, Mayor James Dakan, Effie Pentz, Marylou Cooper, Larry Mitchell and Sue Mullen. Guests: From the Treasure Valley Association For the Blind were Bud Taylor, Andy Anderson, and Anna Ostberg. From the Nampa M�yor's Committee (no longer established) was John Waugh. Chairman Larry Mitchell called the mesting to order at 12:10 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, Caldwell, Idaho. The first item of business was a program presented by four members of the Treasure Valley Association For The Blind. This association was formed in 1980 and has approximately 26 members at this time from the Treasure Valley area. Marylou Cooper introduced the four guests from this organization and each member spoke briefly concerning an area of equipment that is used by blind or legally blind citizens. Anna Ostberg demonstrated a braille writer and spoke about its many benefits. Bud Taylor demonstrated different types of watches and clocks used by the blind. Effie Pentz demonstrated types of recorders used for listening to recorded books. She indicated that the Boise public library has a very sophisticated collection of recorded material that is available for those who do not read braille or prefer to listen to recorded books. Andy Anderson demonstrated and explained the cane used by the blind and its benefits. The program was both interesting and educational. Teri Ottens spoke briefly concerning the poster contest for handicap awareness week. She will be pursueing tnis further. Teri indicated that Committee members should be thinking about 1991 goals and projects they woulcl like to pursue during the coming year. These goals and projects will be discussed fully at the December meeting. Don Thompson presented a suggestion of establishing a resource guide and submitting it to United Way. After some discussion, it was decided to explore this idea at the December meeting. � 1
