The first item of business discussed was the poster contest.
Teri Ottens reported that she had been in contact with the
schools and they wili be unable to get the posters prepared for
this years Handicapped Awareness Week. They set the schedule for
projects at the beginning of each school year and prefer not to
vary from that schedule. Teri suggested that the poster project
get on their schedule for next year.
The next item of business was preparing a list af goals for the
Committee to work towards for te coming year. Some of the goals
that were discussed were: 1) Poster Contest 2) Job Network
informational packet. This project would include putting
together a list af handicapped people that need work and their
capabilities/disabilities. This list would then be available to
employers to use when they have a job opening that might fit the
needs of these workers. 3) Handicapped Awareness Week 4)
Resource Guide. This project would entail putting a committee
together to develop a resource guide to submit to United Way
which would list a variety of services and activities in Canyon
County for the handicapped citizen. Don Thompson has begun a
list of committee members from this Committee and the community
at large.
Teri Ottens suggested that a short 15-20 minute program be
presented each month by either a committee member or someone from
the community that has information regarding handicapped
resources. Dennis Crooks is going to give a slide presentation
at the January meeting regarding accessibility to the handicpped
in Canyon County. Don Thompson, representing Vocational
Rehabilitation, offered to make a presentation in February.
WITCO will make a presentation in March. Teri agreed to continue
to find speakers for each meeting.
