HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-14-1991 MAYOR'S YOUTH COUNCIL � � MAYOR'S COMMITTEE FOR THE EMPLOYMENT ` OF PERSONS WITH DISAHILITIES AND OLDER WORKERS � Meeting of March 14, 1991 Present: Dennis Cr�oks, Vice Chairman, Teri Ottens, Tony Wieczorek, Nancy Randall,, Patti Sandland, John Waugh, Leslie Austin, George Ferney & Don Thompson. The meeting was called to order by Vice Chairman Dennis Crooks at �.2:OQ noon at the Elks Lodge in Caldwell. Tony Wieczorek made a motion to approve the minutes of the meeting of Februar� 14, 1991 as distributed. Leslie Austin seconded the motion. A vote was taken and the motion passed unanimously. The first item of business discussed was regarding preparation of an updated pamphlet with business that have passed the handicap accessibility survey. Teri Ottens stated that nine new business have requested to be surveyed and included in the pamphlet. One business that has requested to be surveyed is the Bon Marche in Karcher Mall. It was the consensus of the group that although this facility is not located in Caldwell City limits, being a member of the Chamber of Cornmerce in Caldwell we would survey the facility and include them in the pamphlet. Teri handed out narnes of other businesses wishing to be survey�d and asked that the results of the survey be returned before the next regular meeting of the Mayor's Committes. The next item of business discussed was in regards to the re- establishment of the Mayor's Committee in Nampa. Teri distributed copies of a letter addressed to Mayor Goering of Nampa offering the assistance of Caldwell Mayor's Committee and encouraging Nampa to re a cammittee. Tony Wieczorek suggested that the handicap signs available for identifying handicap parking }ae mentioned in the letter. With no other changes or additions bein_q off�red, it was the consensus of the members present to accept this letter and send it to Mayor Goering. The next item of business discussed was the availability of ths handicap signs far parking spaces. Teri stated that an ad was placed in the Idaho Press Tribune infor�ning businesses that the signs are available thraugh Caldwell C:ity Hall. The next item of business discussed was the issue of Handicap Awareness Week. Tony Weic�orek introduced Nancy Randall, Caldwell School Nurse. Ms. Randall indicated that the week of April 8- 13 has been designated for Handicap Awareness Week in the grade schools, which includes Washington, VanBuren and Lincoln. Each school will observe a different day which will encompass thinc�s such as an obstacle course with a wheel chair, crutches, and th� use of ear protectors to experience deafness. Those that have volunteered to help with this project will be contact by Tony Weic2orek with times and assignments. 1 � � � Tony also indicated that he will devise an ad for the Idaho Press l Tribune announcing the event. The next item of business discussed was in regards to our cornmittee's membership in the National Organization. This membership is at no cost to us but does benefit us with informational material and an opportunity to enter the national contest held each year for unusual accomplishments. Tony Weiczorek made a motion to renew our membership and possibly enter the contest in the coming year. Leslie Austin seconded the motion. A vote was taken and the motion passed unanimously. Teri stated that more dues are bein_q received from local businesses and the bank account is approximately $2000 at the present time. Leslie Austin from WITCO presented an informational program describing a brief overview of the operation of WITCO. She stated that are two main functians to the program. 1, The rehabilitation process and; 2. The production process. She further stated that when someone is referred for job skill training and job placement, there are several steps they go through to evaluate their skills and place them in a job. Leslie showed a brief video of the WITCO building. It was a very informative program and gave good insight to the service that WITCO provides the handicap worker. Don Thompson stated that had been contact by ECHO and they had indicated a need for help in distributing the Rainbow Resource Guide. They also indicated that any financial help for the pr�inting and d�stribution costs for this resource guide would be appreciated. Teri suggested that the Mayor's Committee purchase some of these and distribute tham to thase business that paid their dues. Teri also suggested that City Hall have some to distribute. Don suggested that before the next meeting everyone make a list of those businesses �nd organizations that could benefit from this guide and we can get an approximate count of how many the Comrnittee could help in distributing.
