SAFETY COMMITTEE
MINUTES
Meeting of December 30, 1992
Present: Curt Doty, Tom Mehiel, Mike McBride, Ed Christopher, Magda Ortega, Linda
Hieb, Dave Marston, Charfie Chadwick, Irv Reich, Ralph Gamboa, Sue Brown and Dave
Garcia.
The meeting was called to order at City Hall in the Conference room at 9:00 a.m.
The first item of business was a discussion regarding the use of back braces. Charlie
brought a back brace and gave everyone an opportunity to see it. He stated that the
cost is between $35 -$40, depending on how many are purchased. After brief
discussion it was the consensus of the committee for Sue to write a memo to Department
Heads urging them to purchase several of these braces and urge their employees to use
them when lifting or doing work that may injure their backs. This should be strongly
advised for those who have already turned in an industrial accident involving a back
injury.
Tom Mehiel showed a video regarding back injuries and how to prevent them. The video
explained the structure of the back and how to lift properly and use various equipment
to avoid injuries.
The next item of business was accident reports of injuries that have occurred since the
last meeting. Several were presented and each was discussed. There are at least three
outstanding claims that will be unable to be closed before the end of the year.
Dave stated that he noticed the accident report forms are not being filled out completely
and Department Heads should be reminded to answer every question on these forms.
Sue stated that she will include this in the memo regarding the back braces.
There was brief discussion regarding the first aid training that needs to be done in the
early part of year. Ralph stated that he would like to see the State Code that requires first
aid training for those departments mentioned in the inspectors report. Charlie stated that
he will contact the inspector and get a copy of the Code. Sue stated that Chris Grooms
is working with the Red Cross in getting this training set up.
The next item of business was a discussion regarding an inspection of City facilities in the
mid part of January to make sure that they have corrected any violations found by the
State inspector. Dave and Charlie are going to conduct this inspection. The report on
violations was briefly reviewed and each department committee member reminded to
have those violations corrected before the inspection.

The next item of business was a report on the tetanus shot offered at West Valley Medical
Center. Sue reported that she called the emergency room just prior to the meeting and
27 employees have taken advantage of the free tetanus shot.
Sue asked the committee members to think about evacuation plans for each of their
facilities in case of a fire. She stated that she feels there should be a written policy for
each building and made available to all employees, both current and new employees just
beginning with the City.
The last item of business was making a decision on who would do a program at the next
meeting. After reluctance and hesitation from all committee members, Dave Garcia
assigned Ralph Gamboa to present the next program.
With no further business the meeting was adjourned at 10:15 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
O
Sue Brown,
Co-Chair
