 SAFETY CO1IIiITTEE
MINUTES
Meeting of March 31, 1994
The meeting was called to order by Co-Chair Charlie Chadwick and
Elroy Huff at 9:00 a.m. in the City Hall Conference Room.
The first iem of business was the industrial accidents received
since the last meeting. Two were presented but neither appeared
to be cases that would cause financial difficulty. One of the
accidents was involving a Fire Department employee who injured
himself while working out on duty. There was discussion regarding
State Insurance Fund paying for these types of accidents since it
is not mandatory for employees to work out while on duty. Sue
stated that she spoke with State Insurance Fund and as long as the
employee is being paid and "on the time clock", any injury will be
paid as an industrial accident. Sue stated that she spoke to the
Fire Chief regarding this issue and he said he was going to advise
his staff that if injuries on the exercise equipment or while
working out became a problem, the equipment may need to be removed.
The other accident was involving a police department employee who
was rear ended in his vehicle while stopped at a stop sign. Sue
stated that she spoke with Lt. Maybon and this accident will
probably not involve a settlement on the part of the officer. The
emergency room visit was paid as an industrial accident but as far
as Lt. Maybon knows at this time, the officer will not be claiming
personal injury and receiving any kind of settlement.
The next item of business was any future goals and projects that
the committee would like to get involved in. Several ideas were
discussed which include: a tracking system for departments in
their own facilities showing the number of days without an IA and
then rewarding them in some way; special classes to be held on
specific topics that pertain to a department's job risks. Elroy
Huff stated that he would like to get a chemical class together for
those employees exposed to any chemicals.
The next item of business was a report that CPR will be offered to
employees in May. Alan Laird reported that Dan Ryan from the
Police Department is now certified for First Aid and CPR and he
could possibly help with those classes. There was discussion
regarding who need to attend the classes. New employees (since the
classes were offered) must take CPR and First Aid, approximately an
8 hour class. Employees wishing to renew their CPR card will only
be required to take approximately a 4 hour class. Anyone who took
the First Aid class last year is certified for 3 years. Sue
advised the committee to find out in their department which
employees need to take which class and bring those names to the
next meeting.

' The next item of business was the disaster plan in progress. Sue
stated that she has only received 2 questionnaires back that will
enable her to put together the facility disaster plans. She asked •
that the committee members remind their department heads to get it
completed and returned. Sue distributed the first two pages of the
plan (as a draft) and stated that when it is complete it will
contain each departments personalized plan of evacuation. Sue
asked that the committee members review this and make any
suggestions or additions at thetnext meeting. Hopefully she will
have the department's plans ready for review.
Charlie Chadwick stated that the State Inspector will be touring
the City facilities in August and each department needs to make
sure their violations from last year are corrected and ready for
inspection. There was brief discussion regarding some items that
still need to be done. Charlie also reported that this inspector
will be the one handling any ADA compliance regulations. He will
begin to point out things that need to be done during his
inspection but the actual ADA inspection will not be this year.
With no further business the meeting was adjourned at 9:45 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
