(I) CHAIRMAN'S REPORT Chairman Cooper said that Shirley Akagi had called him this morning and said that she had a letter that had been sent to her for the Idaho Golf Association addressed to the Purple Sage Golf Course from the lady who is the Junior Golf Coordinator regarding the Junior tournament at Purple Sage. Chairman Cooper told John Watson that fe was sorry that the letter had not been received in time for John to be made aware of the letter's complaints so he could have adequate time to prepare a response. Shirley Akagi said that she did not get the letter until about 5:30 pm the previous day. Chairman Cooper then read the letter to the Board and asked Watson to respond. (Copy of letter attached.) John said that he hardly knew what to say. He said that he thought it was a great tournament. He said that the only thing that he had said to Shirley, after the tournament was over, was that he did think it was inappropriate for them to pull Zach from behind the front counter and use him as a starter. John said that he was very surprised that Vicki wrote this letter, because we had a great tournament and left on great terms. He said Sue Hayes was delighted with the tournament. He said that Sue had gotten the tournament about two weeks before and so she had to pull the tournament together in only two weeks. John said it was a great event and with the possible exception of the problems caused by Zach being pulled from the front desk and the shortage of volunteers, everything went smoothly. John said that with regard to the money they said was available ($500.00), all of the scorekeepers took carts so I said I would be glad to take that money. Cooper then asked John Watson if he thought the statement that Sue Hayes stating that he had shown little interest had merit. John said that he didn't think that the tournament could have so successful if he had shown {ittle or no interest. John said he was there all day, both days, did all the scoring and awarding of prizes and worked behind the counter and did everything he could to make the tournament come off correctly. John said, "I would like to know what was said to Vicki, Shirley." (addressing Shirley Akagi) Shirley said, "First of all John, I have never talked to you about this tournament. She talked to me, she cafled me because she had heard that you had made these statements to some Golf Board members. She told Vicki that she had not talked to John and when people complain to me, I tell them one of two things, either attend the Board meeting or write a letter. She wrote a letter." Loraine Navis said that she understood there was a letter about another but it obviously didn't get here. Chairman Cooper suggested to John that he contact Vicki and Sue Hayes and have a conversation with them and try to mend fences and at least try to find out why they felt so strongly about this that they wrote a letter. John said he certainly intended to do this. John said he had been running tournaments here for 12 years and this was the first group that had ever complained. John said that he felt that his views had somehow be misrepresented to Vicki. Shirley Akagi said that she would like to make it very clear that she did not talk to John, I did not tell her anything that was in that letter. Mr. Cooper asked if any of the other Board members wished to comment. None did. Mr. Cooper said that the only thing he had heard was that the event was successful and very well run. Cooper asked John if he thought he had done the right thing in taking the $500.00 for use of the carts when she had said that, ordinarily, the carts had been donated. John said that on many courses the cart are owned by he City, or a club and not be a private individual like himself. John said that the $500.00 did not make up for the loss of revenue he suffered by not having any cart rental for two days. John said that this was an agreement before the tournament, that it was a concession supplement and he had her label it as such. Cooper asked if there were any other comments. Korinne Sword said that when she had played in JGA events, there had always been a volunteer starter. John responded that i had been a hardship to have to let Zach leave the front counter to act , ,' as starter. John then had to run the counter himself and let other things go that he should have been doing. John said this really created some problems because they used Zach both days. John said he considered this a little issue and in no way did it keep the event from running smoothly. Cooper reminded the Board that Vicki Davis, in her letter, had said that many people thought the tournament was the best ever. John said that at no time had they ever expressed an unhappiness about the event to him. John said that someone must have misrepresented to them something he said, but he didn't know what that could be. Cooper said that they way the letter starts out, "It has come to my attention that John Watson has spoken with some of you regarding the recent Junior Golf Association tournament that was held at Purple Sage." he assumed she meant by this that John had spoken to these alleged persons in a negative manner and that this prompted the letter. She doesn't name any members and f don't know who she would be talking about. Shirley Akagi said that Vicki didn't mention any names to her, she just said she had heard that John was telling some of the Golf Board members that it was the most unorganized tournament he had ever seen and this upset her. John said that he had been involved in some extremely disorganized tournament, but this wasn't one of them. John said you have to be welf organized to hold an event with 130 kids on one course and 120 kids on another. Cooper thanked John for his input and told him again to contact these people and have a conversation with them. John said he wanted to do this for sure because he wanted them to know that whatever they had hear was not accurate. Cooper welcomed Councilman Busch to the board as the new council representative. (11) REPORT FROM JOHN WATSON John showed the Board a copy of Bill Keyes' lifetime golf pass. These lifetime passes had been brought up at the July meeting. Cooper said he had checked with Mayor Winder and that these passes were given out to Councif inembers in a previous administration. This practice has since been discontinued. John said that the course had been really busyin August. We have a lot of events going on plus regular play has been very heavy. John asked the Board what they would think of having an ATM machine put in at Purple Sage instead of the bank cards. Cooper said the Board had already passed the bank card resotution and it had been submitted to the Council to be put into the budget process. It was the consensus of the Board to go ahead with the bank cards. (III) REPORT FROM LENNY STROUP Lenny reported that two golf ticket holders had died and their spouses had inquired about a possible refund on their golf dues. The two deceased men are Vic ; , I Carnahan and Dwight Kinney. A discussion followed. It was moved by Loraine Navis and seconded by Shirley Akagi that we allow a 50% refund to the spouses of Vic Carnahan and Dwight Kinney. The motion passed unanimously. Cooper told Stroup to follow through and see that the refunds were received by the spouses. Lenny reported that play had been excellent in July. (IV) REPORT FROM GORDY CROCKETT Gordy said they were preparing Purple Sage for the Labor Day tournament and right after that, they would begin punching the greens. Gordy said they had been having trouble with breaks in the sprinkler system at Fairview, but had been working on getting the problems solved. A discussion followed on the problems of the irrigation system at Fairview. Lenny Stroup asked what the status was of the Hurst building at Fairview. Loraine Navis said that they people were ready to move it, but the City was holding it up because of regulations regarding things that have to be done. (Yj NEW Bl1SINESS Shirley Akagi asked Gordy if they could put a push broom in the cart sheds. Gordy said they cold and had done this before, but people steal them. Shirley said the patio at Purple Sage was dirty for the Chapman. Bird nest and cobwebs in the overhangs. Also, the area around the back door of the clubhouse by the trash bins needed cleaning up. Shirley Akagi reported that Maude Sower had made a complaint because the Ladies Association had put pfayers on the course on Ladies' Day on the hole that she was playing. Korinne Sword said that what happened was a group went to the wrong hole to begin play and so they interfered with the Sower group. It was just a mistake and shouldn't happen again. Cooper adjourned the meeting.
