City,entitled "An or�Unance to regulate the building o ' sidewalks and crossinqs in Vis City of Caldn-vell" passed and approved by the Mayor and Council of said City on the Ilth.day of Septe!D7 ber I905"which ordinance Ko.148 was passed by the City Council on the 29th. day of November 1909 and. approved by the Eayor on the 30tln..day of November 1909 be an• the same is hereby amended to read as follows: SECTION 2. The space over which the walk.constructed under plan 1,2 or 3,is to be laid shall be excavated to t proper sub-grade and thoroughly compacted by vollina or ramming. Any objectionable or unsuitable material below the sub grade shall be removed an. the space filled with gravel or sand well rammed into pla.oe. Care must 'te taken in excavating to preserve the proper slope parallel with the surface of the finished walk. Upon this f shall bo,e laid a bed of concrete three inches thick to be made as follows: One part of good cement to be approved by the street committee and three parts of clean, coarse, sharp sand. to be thoroughly mixed dry and made into mortar with the least possible amount of water; to this shall be added six parts of broken stone or qravel;sat� stone or gravel shall not exceed one and one half inches in largest -- imer s ions, tb orouohly separated -I 0 • from Art an� drenched with water,but containing no loose water in the heap. This shall be incorporated immediately with the specified measure of mortar and thoroughly mixed. It shall then be spread anc'"' at once be made thoroughly compact by ramming until freq mortar appears on the surface. The upper surface shall be made exactly parallel with the surface of the completed waft. The mortar and concrete shall not be mixed in greater quan- tities than is required for imme use,and none remaining unused until having set again be remixed or ussd in any way. The whole operation of mixinq an laying each batch of concrete shall be performed as expediti- ously as possible. Upon this base the warin7 surface shall be laid an inch in thickness. The wearing surface shall be made as follows: The oement and sand shall be thoroughly mixed cry and a sufficient quanity of water afterwards added to - a paste of proper consistency. It shall be expeditiously mixed and none of it shall be used after it has been mixed one half hour or evidence of set- ting is apparent.The wearing surfac= shall be laid upon the concrete base while the latter is still soft and adhesive,anf,� must be thoroughly worked and brought to a uniform but roug,,hened surface; It must be slate colored and must be protected from the action of the sun,wind,rain and frost until thoroug set.
