The Mayor read the following letter written by Ron Redmond, the
City l3ngimeeo to the City Council and tine Mayor:
One of the main additions to our treatment plant facility from
our last expansion project was the installation of a traveling
Sam! finer. This system filters out any residual solids from
our treatment effluent to insure a clear liquid, leaves t', plant.
The system operates over a, series of individual cells over which
a type of vacuum hood systematically raises and Ir-)werq over each
cell. to clean the sand filter modia.
A n
ongoing maintenance prot)lem of these f ilters was a threaded
screw which mechanically raised and lowered the hood system.
Several of the component parts of the system were made of brass
and had to W replaced approximately every six months at a cost
of about 1400 per filter (2). Both filters had reached a poinL
that tie mechanical systems needed to be completedly replaced.
"his tqas at ) cost of several, thousand 1ollars each.
The fellows at the treatment ,
plant, primarily Glen Hollis, Noel
Payne and Joe Franklin along with Kenny Patterson, put their
heads together and with the help of a supplier, modified these
systems to a hydraulic-operated capability, Installation cost
was much less than implaczrnent of t 'c systc and does
not need the periodic replacement of parts. The system should
last for a long time, thereby saving t:he treatment plant
significant maintenance funds.
These follows have done a good job.

Councilman Raymond questioned as to why the City has to pass an
ordinance every year to update this portion of the City Code.
Mr. Davis stated that this was done every threa years. Mr. Davis

as the State now has a :mandatory Uniform Lire Code adoption which
would be similar to the adot ")tion of the mationa l Electrical. Code
or Uniform Plumbing Code through the State. The City does not
have a choice. Thera was some discussion with regard to the
necessity of this update. The Mayor stated that this would be
considered the first read inq o! Bill No. 12 and that the
