APPROVAL OF PAST MINUTES: Tricia Lofton motioned and Claudia Suastegui seconded the motion to accept the minutes from the April 28, 2022 Youth Master Plan Committee meeting. MOTION PASSED Special Presentation: 20 Drug Coalition - Daphne Lightfoot and Dawn Callaham Primary goal is education and awareness - Focus on combating misinformation about smoking, vaping, drugs, alcohol. A list of resources is attached to the minutes, as well as a .pdf of the PowerPoint and links to online sources. • Vaping delivers higher concentration of nicotine than smoking, kids become addicted more quickly and it is harder to quit. "Flavors" are attractive; marketing makes it seem safer than smoking. • Vaping is a gateway to other drugs: devices can deliver THC products, and can be used for alcohol. • Mental health issues and substance abuse go hand in hand. Fentenyl is of particular concern. Very small dose is lethal, low cost to producers, and easily disguised. What can we do? • Prevention is key. Educate parents; parents talking to kids about this has greatest impact. Start early. Use social media, brochures, website resource links, wellness fairs, farmer's markets, etc.. • Make resources available: smoking cessation, vaping 'facts' to combat misinformation. • Promote low-cost family activities and after school activities such as Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCA, Recreation Youth activities, AAFV family nights, etc. Committee reports: Caldwell Youth Forum- Angie Point on behalf of Ron Bonneau The College of Idaho has committed to co-sponsor the annual Youth Forum and act as host for the event on Wednesday, September 14, 2022.
